A little of both, actually.
Your metabolism rises when drinking causing you to burn more calories & need more fuel. At the same time the alcohol is interacting with your stomach acids causing digestion to become accelerated.

Its about your blood sugar, when you have carbohydrate (sugars-starch) like alcohol your blood sugar goes up, high blood sugar damages your body so your body releases the storage hormone insulin.
Insulin lowers your blood sugar if your blood sugar was very high you will get more insulin release and your blood sugar will crash this is one of the reasons you feel tired after you stop drinking, when you get a crash your body will give you strong cravings to eat.
You can limit this effect by having a high fiber, high protein meal with the alcohol but alcohol will still be bad for your system.
It also stimulates the stress coping mechanism of your nervous system, which increases storage of energy from your food and breaks down healthy tissue to keep you alive. So short term it does raise metabolism but it wont burn up your food as a fuel.

Alcohol does have a similar effect to NSAIDS (Ibuprofen, Naxproxen, etc.) - reducing/damaging the gastro-intestinal lining. That was the great thing about Cox-2 inhibitors like Celebrex - they didn't. So Celebrex wasn't as bad, used in conjuction with alcohol.
Personally, I found my self-control weaken when I was drinking. So my diet went off the rails, when I was drinking.
BTW - protein (and carbs) 4 calories per gram, fat 9 calories per gram and alcohol 7 calories per gram. So alcohol is almost as bad as fat - per gram.

Actually alcohol is a depressant, which will slow down your metabolism, most likely. I'm guessing that alcohol is changing your balance of neurotransmitters to the extent that your brain realizes its chemicals are out of balance, and calls for food because food increases serotonin.

i don't think it increases metabolism....alcohol is just consuming a bunch of empty calories/carbs. empty meaning that it's full of them, but it doesn't fill you up like food would.
i think some people just get munchies when they drink.

its the taste of it. are you drinking it on an empty stomach? liquour puts wholes in people's livers. so when you drink a lot of it you often have to pee a lot. liquour isn't good to drink, if you can stop.

Maybe because your intestines had nothing to grind before drinking liquor, better eat before drinking.
