"When some of the world's leading religious scholars gather in San Diego this weekend, pasta will be on the intellectual menu. They'll be talking about a satirical pseudo-deity called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, whose growing pop culture fame gets laughs but also raises serious questions about the essence of religion.

An Oregon State physics graduate named Bobby Henderson stepped into the [Intelligent Design] debate by sending a letter to the Kansas School Board. With tongue in cheek, he purported to speak for 10 million followers of a being called the Flying Spaghetti Monster -- and demanded equal time for their views.

There's no more scientific basis for intelligent design than there is for the idea an omniscient creature made of pasta created the universe. If intelligent design supporters could demand equal time in a science class, why not anyone else? The only reasonable solution is to put nothing into sciences classes but the best available science."

I was impressed by the FSM satire when it unfolded; theists had no where to run; their old Goat Herders' Guide to the Galaxy looked exactly as it is – re-cycled Bronze Age myth and superstition parading as TRUTH in an age when GODDIDIT is one of the best jokes in all comedy.

That's AWESOME!

This is not some little seminar, this is THE Annual Event for theologians and religious scholars. The fact that they're talking about the FSM... brilliant! (I guess that gives you an idea of where I.D. shows up on the theological radar screen...)

Peace to you.

I could easily disprove the FSM. Imagine a court room and get one of these so called believers to take a lie detector and purger themselves in a courtroom. The more they try and insist the validity of such an argument the more foolish they appear. It is a flawed approach to try and disprove legitimate viewpoints by creating a fake argument. A smarter approach is to attack the weakness in your opponents arguments and demonstrate the strenghts in your own which in this case we can all agree are non-existent, rather than creating a big fake target for them to disassemble. And for your interest the FSM is a fictional account whereas Intelligent design has a number of peer reviewed scientists. So there is a big difference. Edit: I had a vaguely similar conversation some time ago when I posed a question about the spaghetti monster. I noticed within a short period of time all those so called believers admitted they didn't really believe in it. None of them wold say they would be willing to take a lie detector in a court room and purger themselves. So much for the FSM.

Well, the Spaghetti Monster would have gone down the drain fast, cause the average span of life for pasta products is around a year and decreases exponentially if cooked. They "expirrre"
