Yes, it's very, very rare, but it has happened. Every once in a while you run across a novice exhibitor with a dog that's totally unsocialized and they put it in a show. The dog freaks, the owner is clueless, but the judges are normally savvy enough to stay back.

Yes, it does happen as well as other dogs being attacked at shows but it most commonly occurs due to handler not paying attention and allowing certain behaviors to occur that trigger it. Also sometimes there are judges that in certain breeds can tend to play games and eye a dog in a manner that will make them defensive, I have put them on my list to not go under as that is just idiotic. I had an English Mastiff I was showing years ago that went for a judge -- I caught her before she actually got him but it was her first show, the sun was behind the judge and he was wearing a hat and she really couldn't visualize him well and it was a sort of bizarre thing -- she really was a very mild mannered b*tch but was so big that even a woof was near the guy! He did not dismiss her as she was able to be gone over after I repositioned her slightly to allow for her to not be approached by a dark funny shaped shadow -- and she was fine... if they do actually bite though, or if they show aggression or shyness, they are supposed to be dismissed from the ring. It used to be that a dog was allowed two 'disqualifications' from the ring but I think that may have changed over the years to one but you would need to check the AKC site to make sure. Most dogs are trained enough and socialized enough that the exam doesn't bother them but there are instances where they can feel threatened and react badly so it is important to always be aware of this -- these are strangers touching all over them and some people, even judges, can give off 'bad vibes' to some dogs for a variety of reasons -- they are just dogs and people interacting and you just never know unless you are being very aware of what is going on. It doesn't happen like all the time but it does occur and I actually know very few judges who haven't had dogs either come after them or actually bite them. You gotta remember too that we can all have 'off' days where we just don't feel good and someone can get on our bad side quickly! There are also just plain unstable dogs that are shown as well -- dogs that likely shouldn't even be shown but are coddled along in great hopes they won't get disqualified for going after someone. All dogs have the potential to bite given the right set of circumstances and stressors.

Yes!! CH Upton's Trips to Win (German Shepherd) bit a judge here in Indiana during a German Shepherd specialty show. He got disqualified from showing ever again in AKC conformation!! It does happen, we handle the dogs and socialize them very well, so that it does not bother them when a judge goes over them in the ring. Tripper is owned by someone that also had hard core German dogs, and we do think that he was agitated for bite work.

Oh you betcha. I was at a show once when a chow chow decided to have the judge for lunch. Lunged up and nailed him right in the face, hard. Bled like crazy....of course the dog was disqualified....they had to put a hold on the classes while the judge got tended to. That wasn't the only one I've seen, just the most memorable...probably for the spectators, AND the judge....

I saw a dog snap at the judge one time. The dog was Young and that was it's first show. Seems like it was a Peke. The judge didn't get bit because he was fast. He simply turned and walked away though. Didn't make a big deal out of it. Guess it does happen at times. Otherwise he would not have expected it and been so quick to pull his hand away. Love to watch those shows. We have a Great Pyrenees like the one that won for "working class". I love all of them.Saw a few that I had never heard of though.

It happens occasionally, but such dogs are disqualified or excused immediately.
As a rule, judges are dog savvy enough to tell when a dog is likely to bite. Most won't take the chance.

Yes, sadly, it has. I've witnessed snapping, nipping, growling...all of which is unacceptable behavior.
It is up to the judge whether or not to excuse a dog from further comeptition.
Recently, I observed a dog biting it's handler when doing the down and back to the judge. IMO, that dog should have been DQ'd....
That's why correct temperament, socialization and training are sooo very important...

Oh yes, it happens. Not frequently, but it does once in a while. The dog gets removed from the ring if it does. Some breeds even have, under the 'disqualification' section of the breed standard "any dog that bites the judge".

Yes! They are very careful and dogs that are shown need to be very well socialized. They will send a dog out the ring for aggressive behavior and after 3 times they aren't allowed back in. Bad temperament is not acceptable.

Of course. Then the dog is EXCUSED from the ring! Not a good thing to have happen to your dog!! I saw one dog a few years ago bite a judge in the shoulder just after he checked the dogs testicles. The judge was NOT happy!!!
(Just to be clear...the dog that bit the judge on the shoulder was NOT a Newf!!!!!!!!!)
