$600-$1200

PLEASE go to http://mytoos.com and read everything there before bring home a cockatoo. I own many large parrots and i can promise you that every word on that site is true. Macaws make better pets though, incase you end up not wanting a cockatoo and yet still want a large parrot..

good luck hun.

And rememeber that theres many GREAT birds waiting in rescues. Petstores only have animals from pet mills.

The minimum price for a cockatoo about $800-$1000.00 for the Umbrella variety, the most common.
Others available are the Moluccan, Sulphur Crested, Lesser Sulphur Crested and the Goffin.
Moluccans are the loudest, largest available in the retail trade that are captive bred.
Before purchasing a hook beaked parrot, read about them. Keeping this type of bird should be a lifetime committment of 30 or more years, requires nerves of steel, patience, proper diet, well made large cage and a lot of socialization.
Person owning this kind of bird should not be working 8 hours a day, because the bird will squawk or pluck feathers
from lack of attention.
I own a pet shop but refuse to sell these elegant birds; rather refer serious minded customers to Bird Rescue Groups for education so they can adopt one.
I own 2 rescued cockatoos. One is a Moluccan, had been shot with a pellet gun, and very seriously emotionally abused.
The other, an Umbrella was abused by young children.
The birds are members of our family--like 3yr. old children. Very intelligent and loving/cuddling, but jealous of a new baby or boyfriend and not at all predictable like a dog.
If you are looking for an adult bird, a pet shop is the worst place to obtain one because you will have no history or behavior clues.
Baby birds require an extended time of handfeeding and the utensils for feeding must be sterile or the bird can easily become ill and die. Good Luck in your search.

Cockatoos cost all your life's freedom. You'll never have a queit lazy morning or be able to travel or work long hours again. or even talk on the phone and be able to hear what your saying. They are absolutely incredibly loud and one of the most neurotic birds you can own. They love their people and have to be with them constantly and don't tolerate changes well.

Most 'toos cost between $1-2.5 K, but it depends on the species.

A cockaTIEL is pretty cheap ($40-70).
A cockaTOO is way too expensive (over $1000), and way too loud for me!
