If you have a victim who has lost consciousness, and cpr does not work. Where on the neck would you make a incision and insert a straw/tube?

You are talking about an emergency cricothyrotomy. This is ONLY if there is an airway blockage that is above the larynx that is not allowing you to get air into the lungs. ONLY. If you feel your neck at the larynx; there is a soft space just below--that is where it happens, and then you have to breathe into the tube you put in there. If the airway blockage is below this area, it won't work--the block is still there. However, if 911 was very close I would call them first before anything else.

ADDENDUM_to some of the others: this is NOT a tracheostomy--that is a surgical more permanent procedure where is tube is placed for breathing--like Christopher Reeves. A "crich" is just for emergencies ONLY and it is NOT done at the base of the neck. And besides, asker was just getting info--didn't say he was going to do it!

If you are trying to do CPR and the air does not go in, you do Unconscious Choking techniques until it does.

Remember- in M*A*S*H, Father Mulcahey did the operation under the direct radio supervision of a trained emergency doctor (Hawkeye), not on his own.

If you were trapped somewhere and in radio contact, the expert on the other end MIGHT walk you through this when the time came- but it ain't going to happen in real life, so don't hold your breath!

You don't make the incision. You call 911 and you keep on giving CPR until they come to help. If you do that you could get in trouble for it.

Ah, another M*A*S*H watcher, Please leave anything past CPR to the professionals (Paramedics, Doctors, Father Mulcahey, etc.). The current recommendation are just maintain compressions and readjust airway as needed. Tracheostomies are last ditch efforts if the airway has spasmed closed. Until then, chin tilt and keep plugging along until help arrives. If you are a med student you should have access for the procedure guides for this procedure. It should be in your Med school's library.

The only time that is done is when the person has something stuck in the airway, you would not be doing cpr for this you would be doing the heimlich. And even then this procedure is only done under extreme circumstances where the person is going to die other wise, if that is the case it is done where the indent is at the bottom of the neck.

Endotracheal Intubation or a combi tube go in the oropharnx and down the throat, I have NEVER heard of cutting to insert a tube.

That is not part of first aid. If you do that and something bad happens to the person, you are not protected by the Good Samaritan Law. Only doctors who've been trained to perform surgical procedures should perform surgical procedures.

Trachea!
I'm a Medical First Responder and we're not trained to do it so I'd never attempt it, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it to the general public. Leave it to a professional!

You don't. If it comes to something like that it should be left to a medical professional. You could end up killing someone.
