It will be used as a dog and pony show, similarly to Roe versus Wade, with each side changing their minds and philosophies about the subject to persuade voters to vote for them.
In the end, who ever gets the nod will do nothing about it. Both parties are split internally and also do not want to work together across the two gangs, I mean parties.

Dems want the vote, yes. True, illegal aliens can't vote, but their legal relatives, friends and groups like La Raza, in fact the whole Latino community in this country will vote for anyone who is on the pathway to amnesty. Big business wants that to happen too. Giuliani is a sell-out, because he wants the vote.

I hate to say it, but a lot will depend on the polls. If the majority of people show immigration as a top priority, it will become a battleground. If polls show that its 10th or 11th on the "issue importance" lists, then it won't get too heated. Romney has already started to change his tune a little, we'll see how many more play it for votes, and who sticks to their guns.

truly master Dave / this will or may be an empty promise by the candidates to only get the white house / then they my proceed with a good facade to make it look as if they are doing what they have promised. or they may go forth with the same statuesque as the one before . unless we make them accountable for all that they have promised. its up to time to see any real results.

As you say, both sides love the illegals. By mutual agreement, I think, they'll just avoid the issue as completely as possible, and focus on impractical giveaway schemes (like Universal Health Care), fearmongering (War on Terror), and tired hot button issues (Abortion, Gay Marriage).

Then add millions of angry citizens to the mix ready to show the door to any politician that doesn't back strong immigration enforcement and secure borders. Makes for an interesting election

When I hear a politician say that nothing can be done without "a comprehensive immigration reform," my heart skips a beat. What does he/she mean by "comprehensive immigration reform"? They say it to mean what YOU want to believe that they mean, but what they REALLY mean may be the opposite of what you want. [Does it mean, AMNESTY? A "path to citizenship"? Deportations? Just using the term "comprehensive reform" means nothing, in and of itself.]
Beware!!

Whatever candidate promises to build the fence and stop the illegal aliens from entering the U.S. will win. There is 88% of the U.S. citizens that want it to STOP now.

I predict that it will be used as a litmus test because most legal citizens are against it, but I think eventually it or something like it will happen, unfortunatley, because they are courting the Spanish vote. (Why idon't know, because if you are illegal, you shouldn't be able to vote anyways)
