Yes, you will probably have to go see your primary care doctor. The key for most insurance companies is to save money. A sore throat and irriatation sounds like something that your primary doctor can treat. If it continues for months or keeps coming back, then a referral may be necessary to see either an allergist or ENT.

If you have a simple cold or a virus, an ENT will probably feel as if you have wasted his time.

Remember, your doctor has to justify why you need to be seen by a specialist.

The short answer is yes and no. You may just need to call your Family Doctor to get a referral to an ENT.

Well, if your doctor won't refer you ask why. If you don't like answer change your PCP. Or, if you have the cash, just make an appointment and go on your own.

It's probably best to just go to your regular doctor to treat this. It could be a cold or allergy.

Talk to your dr. and tell him you need a referral. If he won't refer you, you change doctors to someone who will refer you.
