And the parents (who we never met) recognized our name and address and told us that we would get it for free. I know the business is struggling, and I insisted that I wanted to pay, although I was so grateful of the offer.

How do I handle the delivery person at the door? Do I insist on paying, do I accept as is? How should I handle this? (the bill is pretty significant. I thought I would be "helping" them as well as having a nice dinner)

Pixie,
I like the answer that 007 gave two people above me. It maybe viewed as an insult if you do not accept - I am merely going off of my time living in Asia. (I am also assuming that these people are Asian).

Gerry :)

All you can do is hand over a reasonable sum.

You can't force them to take it. If that means the delivery person gets a huge tip this time, so be it.

Maybe your daughter can let her friend know that you'd much rather pay. (So in the future, they'll consider just taking the money, or giving a token discount.)

But if they want to give you the food free, you can't stop them; you've already ordered it.

It's their choice.

Though perhaps you now know why they're stuggling.

Don't feel guilty if there's nothing you can do. Maybe they intend this as a one-time thing, and next time will charge.

Although it is a very kind offer, it is overgenerous. I would insist on paying the driver and if he refuses, drop off a cheque with a thank-you card to the restaurant. As you are aware of their status ( a struggling restaurant) it is not appropriate to accept a gift of this magnitude:)

The driver will have been notified that the order was on the house and will probably keep the money if you pay him.
Next time you have the oppurtunity go to the restaurant with a few friends and pay then.

I would pay the bill, and hopefully not offend them. Tell them you do consider it to be a very generous gesture, however, you would simply not feel right not paying for your meal. If they are insist, then do not pay... And give the delivery person a very generous tip... God bless****

accept it for free and call them again thanking them that it maybe your last because even tho the food is great the part of being free is just isn't right. So to have a next time they must accept your payments or there'll be no more orders.

Hum, you can only protest so much. Then you embarrass them. And next time, order under your maiden name. :)

I'd say, accept the food for free, but tip the delivery boy what you owe. Especially if he is part of the family. (which is often the case.) Chat and ask him if he is and if he is, then you have your easy you.

Accept this gracious offer ,do not tip the delivery boy more than normal as he keeps all tips, drop by to thank them for the gesture and ask them round to your house for a meal, drink etc to repay thier kindness.

It is always asian culture to never let the other person pay the bill but it is courtous and let them save face to pay it.

I would tip the delivery boy as much as the meal cost.

If it came to $25.00, give him $30.00.
