A lot of religious folks seemed determined to disbelieve it, come what may. Is that because evolution endangers their religious beliefs?

Oh I don't know... I'd rather be related to monkeys than some of the characters I see hanging around the streets late at night... :-)

davidm: That's just silly. How can acquiring knowledge be something that you should be punished for?

Logic, reason, common sense and rationale are fatal to religion

Evolution is a continuing revelation (eye opener) for the religionist. The ability to recognize facts wherever they find it is the measure of honest thinking. I don't think religion and science have to be at odds with each other. People have limits, and so the clashing is because of the "box" they sometimes put themselves into. It is better to try and side with the idea that there is truth to be found in both science and religion. I feel that there really is a way to break out of the stagnation of fighting about it, but both sides have to be open and willing to throw out some of their ideas, even if they have been long cherished as being true. Nobody ever discovers something profoundly new and true until they do that. Human scientists and human religionists are not perfect, don't have all the answers and should never profess to.

No, it is because they are willing to consider the fact that evolution can help their religion advance to the next level. I believe everything evolves including religion because it is so tied up with us and our culture. Yet the strong will survive and the weak will die. Also I prefer that the meek ones that will inherit the earth believe in evolution, because they are the ones who see themselves not already as perfect, but still growing as a person and a species. To be able to admit that is weak and humble and some people just don't have the balls.

There is no reason why both cannot exist together. Even the Catholic Church recognizes evolution as a viable and worthwhile science. God gave us a mind. We might as well use it. I believe in both and neither one contradicts the other. I have faith in God and the Fossil record cannot lie. If you've read Darwin's book you would see that he barely makes mention of human evolution. Some of the people who have answered this question should do some reading outside the Bible so they know what they're talking about.

All knowledge is damaging to religion, if not quite fatal yet. Religion requires an environment of ignorance to survive. Much like mold thrives in a dark, damp environment. Every new piece of information science uncovers about the way the natural universe works pushes religion just a little bit farther out to the fringe of society where it belongs.

of course it is. So is re-incarnation. A loving god would not give you ONE chance to get it right or you go to hell. Religion is strange and defies all logic. In fact if you confront them with logic, they will talk all around you, but never admit that what they believe makes no sense, instead they talk of 'faith' in things that sound ludicrous. A VIRGIN birth? I am a single mom and don't know who the dad is. My family is very religious. If I would have pulled the vigrin birht they would laugh at me, yet their god had a son that was that. I dont' know... how can you see what makes sense and deny it? Evolution makes much more sense due to the fossils and scienciftc proof

It does.To tell you the truth ''christians'' are so worried about witchcraft and the supernatural being so bad to the their religious beliefs that they donot know that the real religion that is the threath is Scientology.Scientology is slowly but surely putting every strand of ''christianity'' under its ''microscope'' examining it and shredding it/snuffing it out bit by bit, story molocule by story molecule. In fact scientology with factual evidence findings has already proved that at least 50% of the bible is fake, just wait until scientology really gets revved up.Evolution is real on all levels(mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, etc) and it is been for over 10billion years and it will be for many, many more to come.

It is the other way around, religion is fatal to the study of evolution. How many times have religious groups tried to have school teach their silly ID..

Only the fundies. Most Christians don't feel threatened by it. By the way the whole subject of evolution v. religion is getting a little tired. Could we try something new? How about mevolution v. meligion? I know,it's change for the sake of change. But still.

Well, evolution contradicts religion. That is why religious people so vehemently deny even the possibility of evolution. They will not examine the facts, because doubting their religion is a sin.

No, the theory of evolution is NOT fatal to true religion. I do not believe the theory of evolution because it is based in supposition and conjecture.

All the evidence a scientist has exists only in the present. All the fossils, the living animals and plants, the world, the universe—in fact, everything—exists now, in the present. The average person (including most students) is not taught that scientists have only the present and cannot deal directly with the past. Evolution is a belief system about the past based on the words of men who were not there, but who are trying to explain how all the evidence of the present (that is, fossils, animals, and plants, etc.) originated.

Webster’s Dictionary defines religion as follows: “Cause, principle or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith.” Surely, this is an apt description of evolution. Evolution is a belief system—a religion! (1)

Many people have launched efforts to depose the truths of the Bible. ALL have failed.
