Interesting that Yahoo wanted to put this in the Marriage and Divorce category.

I'll call you right back is one of those saying with indefinate meaning like "a couple of minutes" or "It's not you it's me". :) What they mean is they will call you back when they finish their business, and have a spare moment. Unless it's an emergency situation, there is no time period. They are being intentionally vague because they don't know when they will be able to speak with you and give you the attention you need. If I'm on the phone and you call and I'm talking to my insurance agent about saving 70 dollars a month on insurance, and he drones on for a hour and when I get off the phone it's after 10 pm (the time after which it is rude to call) them right back is tomorrow, because I don't want to disturb you after hours. I will probably start our next conversation with "Sorry I didn't get back to you last night, it was on the phone longer then I thought and it was after 10, so I didn't want to bother you" This is Civility.

It is also unfortunately true, but sometimes "I'll call you right back " means "I'm doing something more fun or important then talking to you". It's probably rude, but sometimes, you're going to call them right back, aren't you?

Now, if you call me on the phone and say your broken down on a dark road and hear the music from Deliverence and I say "I'll call you right back" because I want to change over to my cell phone - then 5 minutes is the outside. :)

Dark roads non-withstanding, there are a lot more jerky things people do then not call you right back. if they have a good excuse, let them off the hook.

Hi Anita.

When someone tells me, "I'll call you right back," they usually add something, like "I'm on the phone with my mom, husband, doctor, etc." So, I'll usually give it a half an hour before I get involved in something that means I won't want to talk on the phone.

If they really can't talk at that time, they will say, "can I call you later." This lets me know they are busy; and they aren't obligated to tell me their business. So, I just tell them sure, it's OK, or whatever. If I have plans later, I will add that they won't be able to reach me after a certain time because I'm going out, having dinner, etc.

I do find it annoying if someone says, "I'll call you right back," and they don't. I feel that if they couldn't talk, they should have been polite enough to just tell me that it wasn't a good time to talk. If they were uncomfortable doing that, they could have let VoiceMail or a machine pick it up. These days pretty much everyone has Caller ID; so if they see someone they don't want to speak to at the moment, they shouldn't answer it. I'd prefer to leave a message than sit there waiting for someone to "get right back to me."

As I said, though, with most of the people I know, it isn't a problem. Usually people who act rudely in the phone department don't make good friends, in general. So, I've found that people who don't call me right back, don't usually remain my friend — not because of that specific problem. It's that the phone problem is usually indicative of how they will act in other situations.

I am a forgiving person; and I have had friends who, on rare occasion, have forgotten to get back to me. People do make mistakes; and these friends are sincere in their apologies. They are different from the ones who make it a habit, showing that I'm not very important to them.

Just because we have all this technology, doesn't mean we should forget good manners. It seems as if quite a few people have let manners go. It doesn't hurt to be polite; but being impolite can hurt another's feelings.

****, it's how long you are really happy with waiting. If to you that means 12-15 minutes, make that one of your standards for dating men. If a man calls back 2 days later and acts like he did nothing wrong you 'll know that "call you right back" to him means 2 days later! So that means he's not for you because you want a man that knows "call you right back" means call you right back!

It depends on the person and how many other times they said I'll call you right back, if they always do it, I would automatically be expecting they'll call me when they get the time, but if it hasn't happened before, fifteen minutes, but sometimes things come up unexpected, but if it becomes a ritual you know what to expect.

I believe it depends on what they are saying "I'll call you right back" to. If you are talking to your friend and you wanna see if they want to go to the movies in awhile i believe 20 minutes is the max. But if it was hey do you have any plans next weekend? Then I believe you can wait for two hours.
