I took my boy to the vet earlier because he was feeling crummy the last few days but no real "sympotoms" $360 later they gave him penicillin, an antinausea injection, sent me home with amoxicillin, and metronidazole, and some subcu fluids... I've given hundreds of shots and given subcu fluids several times, but he has a lump on his back? I've never seen this from fluids before, only certain types of shots... what should I be doing? I would call the vet but they're closed now and I hate to wait until tomorrow because he's dehydrated and needs them. I know lots of medical junk about dogs but this one is escaping me!!! Any vet techs would SERIOUSLY be appreciated right now.

I've already taken the needle out, since it started to bubble and freaked me out.... and he didnt even move when I stuck him which is a sign he REALLY isnt feeling good.

Ok I called the E-vet. They said it was normal... Thank you all for answering... I'm just paranoid as usual! He's not deathly ill or anything, just got a bug, he's had a little diarrhea and vomiting, plus he's been too lathargic to drink as much as he usually does, he drinks a LOT most of the time so even drinking a little bit worried me! Again thank all of you for your answers, he's going back in in the morning.

Yup, I had one girl with a HUGE bulge one time from the subcu. She sloshed when she walked. The vet gave her to me that way and had me take her home.

It went down overnight.

I have trained dogs in protection and agility for 11 years and am also a firefighter/paramedic and have taken an emergency paramedic treatment for dogs class so I can help in the event a police dog gets injured. This lump is nothing to worry about, it is common for dogs to have this happen. We give our fluids to dogs I.V. but were told that if we couldnt get a line in a vein and had to go sub Q that a lump would form. It will go away over the next day or so.

Bubbling is not at all uncommon. I have given many, many subqu fluids over the years to my pets as well as others and almost always end up with a bubble.

You may not have noticed it before because the needle may have been smaller, allowing for less fluid at one time to go under the skin.

The fluid will be absorbed. It is nothing unusual or worrisome at all.

Hope this helps.

This is common with sub Q fluids. All it is is the fluid building up under the skin. It will be absorbed by the dog.
I often do it in several places if needed to give the fluid for dehydration.
If hte lump doesn't go down by tomorrow tehn callthe vet.
don't stop he needs the fluid. just give it somewhere else

I would pick up the phone and call anyway. They must have a answering service. Or at the very least a referral number to call. If not than your only other choice is a 24 hrs. emergency vet.

I wish you all the very best.

There is usually a bubble that forms from administering subcutaneous fluids that subsides as the dog absorbs the fluids into his body. It's normal.

When you put the needle in correctly, they don't feel it much, so that just shows you were doing it right.

I would keep a close eye on him. Call as soon as you can. Do all that you can to get him through the night. Are there any vets on call in your area or emergency vets?
