I asked a question earlier, and I was wondering, if I treat My cats for ear Mites and they dont have them, would it hurt or affect them? They have flea collors, and they have all four been scraching at the ears/ heads. There ears are dirty, but its hard to tell what from, living outside or ear mites. Any suggestions? My parents wont go to the vet, so All I can do is go buy something for ear mites. But I want to make sure thats what they have. Could the flea collor be cousing them to scrach around that area, becouse sometimes they scratch there too. Should I take one of one of them and see what happends? And should I see If walmart(thats where Iam going) has any cat ear wipes, and use those on them and see if it helps? Thanks!

Excerpted from Dr. Kidd's Guide to Herbal Cat Care, by Randy Kidd, D.V.M., Ph.D.
More than 50 percent of ear infections in cats are related to otodectes cyanotis, or "ear mites." External ear infections such as ear mites will respond to herbal and other treatments, however infections of the middle and inner ear must be treated by your veterinarian only. Be sure to get an accurate diagnosis before you begin home treatment on your own.
SIMPLE SOLUTION: Gently swabbing the ear canal with a large of chunk of cotton may reveal a gooey brown to black discharge often produced by ear mites.
While ear mites can be annoying to both owner and cat, they are relatively easy to clear up-if we are persistent and give several treatments over the course of 3 weeks. Almost any natural oil-based ear medication, even one that does not directly kill the mites, will ultimately drown them. (The oil covers the mites' breathing pores, eventually suffocating them.)
Ear mites are highly contagious, even though they are usually only found in younger animals, so you will want to treat all of the animals in the household. Don't forget to treat any dogs that are in contact with the infested kitties; dogs are also susceptible to the mites. And even if only one ear appears infected, treat both ears. The mites readily migrate over an animal's head, from one ear to the other.
I usually recommend an oil-based herbal treatment (see below) every day for about a week, then every second or third day for two more weeks. You need to treat your cat for three weeks in order to catch the mite eggs as they hatch. (Mites have a life cycle of about three weeks.)
Mullein Mix for External Ear Infections
Mullein flowers (available in health food stores)
olive oil
crock pot
Place mullein flowers on the bottom of a crock pot. Cover with olive oil. Heat on low for six hours. Cool. Strain. Pour into a glass jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to one month. To use, apply several drops of the oil, warmed to body or room temperature, into the ear canal.

You need to take him back to the Vet. it is not uncommon for the dog to develop an ear infection with or after having ear mites. Mites can only be killed with prescription ear medicine. The ear infection can actually blow out his ear drum which will leave him with hearing loss. It is also extremely painful for the dog and Benadryl does not take away the pain in a dogs ear. Please take him to the Vet asap.

you can purchase ear-mite medicine at any pet store farm store or u can use sweet oil, this can be found at drug store cheap couple of drops a day for a week or so and GENTLY swab ears out with Q-tips DO NOT DIG just get what u can see good luck as for flea collars they really only kill the fleas they come in contact with which is around the neck and it might be irrataiting the cats neck area or feel "funny" on their necks hence the scratching

As long as it's treatment from the vets, it won't hurt the cats if they don't have ear mites. Can't say the same if you get stuff from Walmart.
I'm sorry, but you're not going to find anything useful in Walmart. Stores are not licensed to sell medications, and medications are what you need for fleas and ear mites. Don't waste your money! You better convince your parents to take at least one cat to the vet. But get the flea collars off them, please. They are certainly not helping and could possibly be making things worse.
You can pick up Frontline from a vet without having to take the cats in, that will treat the fleas at least.

Pets need the appropriate "vantage" or other flea deterrant or flea collar, and the proper one you choose must be according to their weight. You home must also be fogged with Raid flea remover that also removes the flea eggs (but this must be under the supervision of an adult AND you must cover everything and leave the home while the fogger is working, then air out the place and wash everything washable), and their bedding cleaned as well.
When you own a pet you must be a responsible owner. And, usually counties allow up to 2 pets per household.
Outdoor pets usually pick up fleas (and where the weather is hotter then the fleas are not killed off by the cold weather and instead, they multiply faster). Outdoor pets, more than indoor pets, and also if there is more than one pet, get ear mites and get them from each other too. The mites multiply deep down in the ear canal and only medication "from the veterinatian" fix the problem. Frankly I would not trust what they sell in the grocery store and the reason is that some items have not been effective, and some items have been dangerous for the pet. If all the pets are treated at the same time then the mites will be cleared up at the same time. sometimes the stuff you buy in the grocery store could be too strong and burn the inside tender skin of their ears and you will have more of a problem than you expected, plus you will be having then for sure to take your pets to the vet and the bill will be costly.
Sometimes cats have long fur in their ears and their fur is what's itching them. But if you see what looks like coffee grounds in the ears then it depends on how much there is as possibly what comes out of the ears is oil, or, it could be mites.
Every cat should be neutered, and they should be getting their yearly shots, plus every three years getting an additional shot. Consult with your veterinarian. If you can't afford the normal vet, then contact your county and ask if there is a veterinarian who will charge only for the shots and licenses for your pets plus check their ears. They have a sliding scale. If the cost is too much for you (remember that each cat costs about $200 a year, plus having them neutered (a large amount) and if you can't afford that, then maybe it's time to give up some of them, give one or two to relatives or neighbors, or give them to a shelter or a pet store if your parents are having problems affording them. One pet is certainly more than enough for a household..
