If you have breed rescue in your area for goldens, check there first. Go to www.akc.org and find the national rescue organization and call them about rescues in your area.
If you can't find a rescue golden, then use www.akc.org to contact the national breed club to put you in touch with your local breed club. Contact them and they will help put you in contact with reputable breeders in your area. Then start talking to the different ones. Goldens are in high demand, it may take time to find a good breeder that has pups available anytime soon, so be patient.
Purebred goldens rarely show up in shelters and when they do, they are usually adopted fast or picked up by rescue organizations. Just my personal experience. In the many years I've worked with our humane society, I've seen three - i adopted one that had been badly abused and needed a lot of training (he turned out great), another was a puppy that was adopted by the first person who walked in after he came in - he never made back to the kennels - and a third was an adult male found wandering the streets that was adopted almost immediately.

In a shelter, there are 2830 Golden Retrievers and Golden mixes in shelters right now, waiting for new homes or they'll get put to sleep. You'll be saving a life and money too. Just look through this list for your state.

um, you can try a shelter or rescue. If you want a puppy, check any adds in the paper or penny saver. You'll find them in the classified section in the newspaper under pets. Good luck!
