The forms are for ideal situations, you hardly ever get into an "ideal" situation on the street, street fights look messy and dirty but doing the forms helps that if you find yourself in a certain situation you can use that move, its those little % that seperate a good fighter from a great fighter
You still need a good basic foundation though, thats why you can't just do flashy stuff and expect to fight like that all the time and the same reason why fighters from Muay Thai for example are so strong, they lear only one or two kicks but because they work hard on the basic foundation they are powerfull
You see it all the time, when people who do flashy arts go into competition and probably in real fights too, they start to fight very basicaly and all the flashyness goes out the window, because its just not an effective thing too use ALL THE TIME
If anything is true its the opposite, that most martial artists need to get the basics down first, learn to walk before they can dance, and once they have a siolid foundation, then you can express yourself with some style.
If you want to look at it from a zen perspective, fighting in Yang, male energy, the basics are Yang, direct and to the point and in it there should be a little Yin energy, this balance makes a great fighter, if they are pure Yang they are strong but they are missing something, and if they are all Yin, they may look great but how effective are they going to be?
Fighting styles are the same, some styles are very Yang and some styles are Yin, the reason why people are not fighting like their syle is because the very act of fighting is direct and Yang in itself and especialy with guys who are naturaly direct, as soon as they get into the ring they revert back to their standard basic fighting, and if they dont have the basics down, if all their art teaches is Yin then they usually loose, but if you watch the great fighters, I can name some karate guys like GSP or Andy Hug, you can see them useing the "flashy" stuff effectively, but they are only able to do this because they have the basics down, if you embody your style but your style is only YIN, your going to be danceing while the other guy is fighting and your going to loose, you need the basics before you can do that

I think that what you must realise is that systems are merely ways of teaching you about how to fight. When you actually apply your skills in a real situation or even a ring situation you will adapt your skills to suit yourself and the situation.
Regardless of what stlye you start in there will always be differences in the way that you do something to that of everyone else even between two people that train at the same place under the same teacher and regularly train together.
There is too much concern for wether people are being true to a certain style or not, really styles are more about the overall phylosophy or approach to fighting than the actual techniques, if something that you do is not a traditional aspect of the style but does fit into the general fighting methods of the style then essentially it is still the same style.

I think I comprehend you. You are not so good at expressing it, but I have worked with people from other countries, so I am good at understanding anyone.
