In very rare cases air bags just blow up. Two things have to happen G sensor air bag control unit in center console has to see rapid change in car direction and crash sensors have to be activated. Some times wiring gets worn or pinched to a power wire ka boom. Un wanted deployment is rare indeed.

We have seen more than a few accidental deployments.
here's what has probably happened. The airbag control unit for the system is located in the console under the armrest / emerg brake area.
If the car was bought used, it may have had the carpets and interior cleaned. When they do that, they sometimes use a high pressure hose and get quite a large volume of water in the vehicle. When that happens, water gets inside the control unit and after 6 months, a year or so the circuits corrode and actually short out the control unit, firing the bags....or
Sometimes a spilled drink in the console will do the same thing
We do investigations for insurance companies and lawyers and usually find exactly these scenarios
