It's a matter of personal opinion. I love watching figure skating on tv and find it amazing that the athletes are able to do stuff like triple lutz's and quads and land on one foot. I have yet to see dancers attempt it on the ground. Ice skaters can also spin SO fast--much faster than I've ever seen. However, most of ice-skating is dance so what you're taking is a very good start. Both activities are very expensive, especially if you travel and do competitions. So, that will always be an issue, unless you have some major financial backing (and kudos if you do).

Either way, if you want to try ice-skating, go for it and have fun.

Try both and see which one appeals more to you. The feeling of gliding on ice is definitely a rush, but a beautifully lyrical pas de deux is just as uplifting. It also depends on what kind of dance you're thinking about studying; there are all kinds for all different tastes.

If you do study skating seriously, I can tell you that eventually you'll have to take ballet - all figure skaters who want to excel must take ballet because they need to learn how to use their arms gracefully and develop good, high extensions. Most skaters I've dealt with in ballet classes had an easy time with turns but a tough time remembering to pointe their toes, probably because they spent more time in skates than in ballet slippers and you can't really pointe your toes in skates.

I'd suggest signing up for skating lessons at a local rink and trying out one or two different styles of dance at a local studio. Most studios will offer a range of dance styles, from ballet to modern, hip hop, jazz, and even bellydance. You can peruse youtube to watch different styles of dance and find one that appeals to you.

No one can tell you which one is better to do - both are arts that will help you develop strength, coordination, balance, and rhythm and both will need a certain amount of dedication in order to be good at them.

Happy hunting!

Take dance..you would need that skill for figure skating anyway, if later you wanted to do that. Also, skating can get very expensive..it's not an inexpensive sport. I would recommend dance absolutely, and then you will have a skill that you can do for the rest of your life.

I'm a little biased to figure skating just because I skated for so long, and still love the sport. Which one do you think you would enjoy more? If you need to you can maybe take one for a while and then switch and then go ahead and switch and take the other for a while and then go ahead and stick with the one you enjoy more! Good luck!

I think it depends what kind of dance you intend on taking.

If you want to get on pointe, then it will take quite a while to get there. I would love to get on pointe but i started late so it will take be about 4 years to get on pointe (total). But I'm not sure about other types of dance, i only take ballet.

For skating- just know its very time consuming and expensive. I love it, but its a lot of work. You should make sure you really love to do it if you want to be competitive.

Good luck!
