in addition to testing for neisseria species, it can also be used to identify gram negative rods. Pseudomonas species are oxidase positive, while E. coli is oxidase negative. while identifying bacteria, you go through a series of tests based on previous test results which give yes or no answers. for example: the gram stain comes first. if you have a gram negative rod (E. coli) or gram negative diplococci (Neisseria species), the next step would be the oxidase test, etc, etc.
