If you don't want him to sleep in your room, I would suggest getting a baby gate and letting sleep right outside your room. That way he can smell and hear and see you.
With regards to the crate, crate training can be useful but a crate is not supposed to be punishment. It is a warm, safe place for your dog. Get a bigger crate and move the crate out of the basement. When you introduce him to the crate, give positive reinforcement so he associates the crate with good things.

Instead of shutting him in the laundry room, why don't you let him sleep in your room? It's his first day home- make him comfortable and get him used to everyone in the house, instead of shutting him away.
If you want to keep him in a cage, get a crate that is big enough for him to turn around and sleep comfortably. Put the crate in your room or somewhere where he can see you and where he's not shut off from everyone else. A basement is not an ideal place for a dog to sleep.

Dog are pack animals and you are part of his pack. He is not going to want to be separated from you. Put his bed near your room so he can feel close. And you will have to put up with some crying for a while. But I'd get rid of the roommate before I put my dog in a small crate. Be a good pack leader.

Ya know, I'd LOVE to know how people KNOW that dogs LOVE little tiny cages and being penned up for HOURS on end.... did they actually ASK the dog? Did the dog reply back? How does anyone KNOW that a dog enjoys being cooped up? I sure wouldn't if I was a dog.... I HATE those crates... I think if you have a dog as a PET it should be treated as a member of the family and you wouldn't stick one of them in a cage WOULD YOU????? I used to RAISE German Sheppards and at one time or another had 3-15 dogs running around at any given time... NONE were crated EVER... in fact in 57 years of owning dogs I've NEVER put a dog in a cage..and NEVER WOULD....Not one of my dogs ever ran away nor was injured or struck by a car EVER. If HUMANS are nervous about being in a new place on the FIRST NIGHT, what DO you expect a DOG to be like??????? Nurture the dog, don't CAGE the poor thing. If you don't have time to train it not to jump on beds or furniture, then you shouldn't have a dog. Dogs are like kids--they need LOVE, attention and AFFECTION... cages are for DOG KENNELS and pet stores--NOT for your PET.

Get a bigger crate, enough to stand, turn around and lay down. A crate isnt cruel. It will take him a few days to get used to his new home and you may have a few accidents until then. I only put my dog in his crate when I leave the house. When I wake up sometimes he is sleeping in it.

Don't put her in the laundry room, put him in your room. Then put him in a cage big enough for him. Give him water and treats and food. But whatever you do don't lock him up.

while you're conscious that he sleeps there... attempt coaching him the command "pass!" on an identical time as he's small, whenever you bypass in the process the door and he's there, open the door and say "pass, or pass canine" after some situations, as quickly as he's used to that command you could say it as you attitude the door and he will upward thrust up out of how in the previous you open it by using fact he's conscious the door might desire to hit him if he would not. canine learn the command "pass" fairly rapidly!

Actually a kennel is a good thing for a dog. They like to have a little safe place all their own. It's not cruel, and it also helps with training, and they feel secure, especially if they are new in your home.

Your roommate is an idiot.
Late Entry : crate your dog at night, but leave him at least for time being near you. The pup is stressed out!!!!
