well i read it in the newspapper but actually maybe it was just the orthodox church that had done it in order to resolve some kind of dispute that is 950 years old.

Several Christian denominations have entered into discussions with the Roman Catholic Church regarding ways of dealing with their differences, and perhaps one of the biggest differences is the authority of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) over other Bishops and over Christians worldwide.

These arguments aren't new. Paul had disagreements with Peter over this issue, and we still haven't entirely solved them.

Several denominations have accepted the Pope as the successor to Peter, and the titular head of the Christian Church worldwide.

Some of these see his role as being "first among equals", and believe that his opinions should be respected and carefully considered, but do not think that he speaks with the authority of God.

And in reality, most Christian denominations hold that the Pope is an important and respected Christian leader, even if we find ourselves in disagreement with some of his teachings.

Considering that Jesus didn't seem to have much use for the traditional hierarchical model of leadership, none of this seems either surprising or even undesirable.
