Has anyone experienced fluctuating vision after RK surgery. My right eye fluctuates dramatically. Both eyes were overcorrected and I needed sutures. Sutures were removed from right eye and it has fluctuated ever since. I went from near-sighted to very far-sighted in that eye. Thanks.

If you are truly talking about RK (radial keratotomy) where a scalpel is used to cut radial incisions in the cornea, then yes others have experienced the same thing. Radial keratotomy changes the prescription of the eye by making radial cuts through the collagen fibrils of the cornea thereby WEAKENING the structural integrity of the cornea. Since the eye is pressurized internally, the weakened areas become steeper in curvature due to a bulging outward of the weakened area. This peripheral steepening results in a flattening of the central cornea which decreases your nearsightedness. Some individuals have significant changes in intraocular pressure throughout the day. If you do indeed have these large pressure variations your prescription may change since the effect of the radial keratotomy is directly related to the pressure inside the eye altering the shape of the weakened cornea. Even though the stuctural integrity of the eye has been permanently weakened, hopefully over time the cornea will regain some of its earlier strength and lead to a more stable result. Since laser vision correction does not cut across collagen fibrils there is no effect on corneal strength. This is one of the many advantages to Laser Vision Correction. Hope this helped.

Hi, I had both eyes done in 1985. I did very well until about 5 years ago when I started to notice a big change in my close up vision. My one eye was done to help my nearsightedness and the other was better for close up which was great. Even then i had some fluctuation at times but it didn't bother me. It seemed to have something to with the pressure in my eyes. My post doctors always seem to think my surgery was a very well done one and looked very healthy. But I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago and that is when it started to go downhill. Now, i can barely see with my left eye (farsighted one) but am better with my right eye (nearsighted one). I'm very concerned as to what is going to happen in the near future because I have cataracts and i know it is going to be a killer for them to remove the cataracts and then try to fit me with lenses that truly correct my vision. I wish I knew who to go to for this. Not that many doctors are familiar with the RK nowadays.
