Social security numbers are only available to persons who can legally work in the U.S. If you are eligible to work in the U.S. legally, you should get a social security number, so that, if you do work in the U.S., you will receive proper credit towards your future eligibility for social security benefits. If you are not eligible to work in the U.S. legally, you cannot obtain a social security number.

Yes, an immigrant can obtain a social security number, but only if you have one of the following:
* Permanent Resident Card (I-551)
* Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) and an unexpired foreign passport
* Work permit card from the Department of Homeland Security (I-766 or I-688B)
* Or, after becoming a citizen of the United States, a U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship

Social Security office will issue a ss card to the person when they become eligible for a green card or become a citizen, showing they are allowed to work. If they already have a ss card but it's identified as not eligible to work, they'll issue a new one without that notation.

Every US citizen has a SSN. Your parents should know it or have the card. Becareful who or websites you give it to. People can steal your identity if it falls into the wrong hands.
