I have checked him repeatedly for fleas. he doesn't have them. i have been told he has allergies and to give him benedryl. I do, and it seems to help some...but this chewing on his tail thing is new, i can now see the skin and it is red. What is wrong with him? How can I help him? What do I need to do for him? Should I go ahead and take him to the vet? serious answers only please.

A friend of mine had a dog that did this. It turned out to be some kind of anxiety issue with the dog. They had to give him some kind of prescription to calm him down. I would go to the vet and give a detailed description of what is going on.

If its not from fleas, it sounds like allergies. The benedryl won't cure anything, it just makes them less itchy and more sleepy. I would take him to the vet, make sure its not some other type of skin problem, then try changing his food to see if that helps. I had a dog that would chew on his tail till it bled, he was allergic to stuff in his food, once we changed food, he got much better.

You should take him to the vet to see hwats wrong. Your dog could have really dry skin and needs medication for the skin to help it. He could have allergies but maybe benedryl is not the answer. Go ahead and take him to the vet and see what they come up with. that might be the best way to handle this. But when ever you see him scratching himself try and stop him i no it will be hard to stop a dog from scratching himself but try cause scratching just makes it worse. good luck. hope your dog feels better.

Yes take him to the vet. It was a vet that told you he has allergies, presumably? Take the dog back there and tell the vet you're still having trouble. Could also be anal gland impaction, and you can't rule out flea - do you know what flea dirts look like?

I had the same problem with a blue heeler once,on the advise of a math teacher of mine at the time I bathed her in that Melaluca stuff,I think that's how you spell it,been a while.Health food stores might carry it or look online,it will have tea tree oil in in.I would also rub tea tree oil into her skin, and her hair even grew back after a few months.Yes,I did the benadryl thing too.But that melaluca stuff really works on dog allergies, just dilute it in water in a bath and take a rag or sponge and rub it all over and let it set a few minutes then rinse, did it at least 2 times a week! Good Luck!

buy him some "Lipiderm" for healthy skin and coat, you can buy it at the pet store. I couldn't get my dog to stop itching even after giving him the benedryl. after about 3 days on the Lipiderm I noticed a difference. Now it's been about 2 weeks and he's almost stopped completely.
