Saint Nicholas of Myra was a 4th century Catholic (i.e. Christian) bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity. In Europe (more precisely the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Germany) he is still portrayed as a bearded bishop in canonical robes. The relics of St. Nicholas were transported to Bari in southern Italy by some enterprising Italian merchants.
He is alive, as are all who die in God's friendship.

I believe in Santa Claus, because he is real. He lives in heaven, as do all who have died in God's frienship.

EDIT: Whoever gave me a thumbs down is clueless

our version of santa claus religious affiliation travels all the way from greeks in turkey. he was an actual religious person who was viewed as humble, using his monies to help the poor and prevent those families from turning their unmarried daughters out to prostition at a young age. it is said that he would drop the monies through an open window while the family slept and this help to alter the decision for the daughters. the us adopted the story during either 1940 or 1950, altering the story version by giving him a red and white outfit, raindeer flying throgh the air at midnite to deliver gifts while we sleep. in the greek cathedrals claus is worshiped as a saint and even believed to be thee..."..."... how i happened on this info? i saw it on discovery channel some years ago; i like you had questions, through i didn't believe in santa.. still you want to know the wheres and whys about things. when things are created on such a large scale such as this you will find yourself asking why, the answer is to stimulating a want for things you don't need. just about every year around this time it will be aired , so watch for it - it will blow you away.

I believe you will find that Santa Claus was originally 'Saint Nicholas' - in the history of the Catholic Church. You might want to 'Google' it. I am sure the present day Santa Claus is NOT a religious thing.......!

I think the entire thing is that Santa Claus doesn't have a religious affiliation because he has nothing to do with the Christian holiday of Christmas. But he somehow got intertwined with the Christian religion and now the Christmas holiday and Santa Claus are one and the same. Sadly.

None really, the man that perhaps gave toys to children hundreds of years ago was somewhat christian but the story of Santa fits no religion. A great way of keeping Christmas alive in homes of whatever religion, Santa lives on.

Christianity. Santa Claus is St. Nicholas, I'm afraid I don't know what he's a saint for doing though.

Well the modern myth only says he is extremely thoughtful towards children. The myth is rather scarce on details. Any right-thinking religion that really praises consideration and trying to make others happy could be Santas religion. If he has one.

I'd say Christianity because the night he delivers all the gifts is on the Lord's birthday (or at least the day we call the Lord's birthday) and only the good kids get gifts and not the bad ones which preaches good morality just like the teachings of Christ.

Clearly, he has the religious affiliation of "Goodness", the same religion that Abe Lincoln affiliated with. And I quote:
"When I do good, I feel good and when I do bad, I feel bad. And that is my religion." - Abe Lincoln

Santa Claus is Catholic. The name comes from the Dutch rendering of St. Nicholas, who was Catholic.
