In the UK the days start getting longer about six hours sooner than the US.( east coast, that is ). That would occur on Dec.22 with the day before being the shortest.

Not so daft the shortest day is december the 21st the logest is june the 21st so after december the 21st the days start to get longer .

It's the same as anywhere else in the Northern Hemiphere: the day after the winter solstice. That day is the shortest day of the year. After that, the days get longer by a couple minutes each day.

Not a daft question at all - it's December 22nd which I believe may be the Winter Solstice. Not entirely that's what they call it but we'll see a 'turn' in the days at that date.

The 21st December is the Shortest day, so after that - although technically the day is always 24 hours - but im just being cocky!

Dec. 22 is the shortest day in the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice. after that, they get longer each day, by approx. one minute, until the summer solstice.
