Those of you who like to correct and to make fun of people when they make mistakes, how many foreign languages can you speak?

Just how serious is it if a person speaks english pretty good but makes one mistake, one time? Is it serious enough to make rude remarks?

AM Sweedny Todd, I'm not a native, I started learning to speak "English" when I was 10. I didn't learn from books, I learned from hearing it, and afterwards from speaking it.

Larissa,
Great Point... Thank You. I was a mathematics major but I am also an avid writer. However, I never point out others mistakes especially in the use of English or it's misuse. My dad used to do that and it drove me CRAZY! I also feel that we should all try to step back and keep the rocks aimed away from others. Those that return could damage our glass homes. B y the way, YOU are as gorgeous as always. Please Keep Smiling.
Thanks,
Eds

Excellent point, larissa! I think people are sometimes a bit too quick to jump on someone's grammar. None of us is perfect and even spell check doesn't account for sentence structure. Usually, you can tell by the way a question is worded if the person is foreign or not. If you know or have been exposed to enough languages then you can actually recognize which grammatical errors occur with different nationalities. Good question!

Yeah, I'm with you - I hate seeing people correct others' spelling and grammar mistakes when that person is obviously not a native speaker. Perhaps those who spoke another language growing up are just more empathetic in this area?

I know it's naive, but I do. Why wouldn't I think adults are as smart as I am, or smarter. Most people are, especially people that speak 2 or more languages, while I can barely speak mine of birth, (English).
I do not correct questions on this forum.

Stopping adults from insulting others or being rude - is impossible, but of course your free to try, and I wish you luck.

Please be at Peace - when you are ignored.

Personally there seems to be an obvious difference between not a native speaker and someone who talks like they are, or mentally still are, about 14.

If someones written English isn't developed to the point of coherency, maybe they should try the Y!A forum in their native language.

Ah well, point taken. I'm an English geek and like to see it used well. I only speak French and a little Italian, probably not well enough to pass harsh scrutiny. I'll be nice from now on. (Within reason.)

Eds, there's no apostrophe in its, as in "it's misuse". It's possessive. Thought you'd be pleased to know.

'well'. 'speaks English pretty well'.

Actually, from that, I'd guess you're a native speaker, since non-native speakers had to learn the difference between adjectives and adverbs.

No, sweet one, I do not.

I will not even mention it unless the person who makes mistakes has called me an idiot or states that all Christians are imbeciles.

At that point, I get riled and somewhat amused, especially if the person making the mistakes says that Christians are illiterate.

Actually, I do assume that on Y!A, since there are different boards for different languages. But I rarely correct or make fun of a person for their langauge unless they're being a jerk.

(And I'm rusty on both my French and my Spanish since I rarely use them.)
