When I turn on my PC there are a couple of different things that automatically open (windows live messenger) and something else. How do I fix it so that these 2 items I rarely use stop the automatic opening?

click your start button, click on run, type in msconfig into the run box. click on the startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to load on startup. Click apply and ok and reboot

I would first look in your program's options to see if there is a setting to keep something from starting when windows starts.

There are a couple of places to look for programs that start up automatically when windows start up. The start up folder is the most obvious. If there is something there just remove it. Next is in the registry under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run and RunOnce (in Windows XP). Also you should check under control panel>administrative tools>Services for unwanted services and possibly config.sys and autoexec.bat files for programs that are started from there. Obviously the usual caveats about hosing your system go along with trying any of this advise. Your best bet might be to search helps sites for the program you are trying to disable for specific instructions.

Go to start menu>run. Type msconfig, then hit OK button. Go down list of programs that are loaded at start-up and uncheck the programs you do not wish to load. You will then restart OS. You will be asked if you wish to be notified every time. Tick appropriate box and that is it. Any problems e-mail me.
