Opening a can of worms with this question!
It is a matter of opinion, is what it boils down to. Many prefer Glocks, and XD's some of us prefer steel gun and even wheel guns. Best advice is to shoot as many as you can get you hands on and choose for yourself.
Glock, Springfield, Kimber, S&W, Ruger, Taurus, Beretta, etc...all make at least one nice gun in various calibers, the hard part is finding which one suits you the best.
As far as reliability and durability (again a matter of opinion) Glocks are pretty good, as well as the XD's.
I prefer my Kimber .45 over any of the other guns I own, but 1911's aren't for everyone.
Grab some buddies, shoot their guns, rent them, or find a range that has a decent selection and try a bunch. Then you can tell us who you think makes the best pistol. It's all up to you.
One thing to remember...you generally get what you pay for when it comes to guns. "Cheap" means "cheap", usually...
Some "less expensive" guns are great values, but if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Good Luck

Are you asking who is the best pistol/handgun? Or are you asking who is the best pistolero? If you are asking who is the best pistolero my vote has to go to previous poster Patti.
If you are asking which is the best pistol/handgun, I'd say it is a personal choice with Glock, Korth, H & K vying for that honor. If you are including revolvers I'd say that Korth & the Colt Pythons are the first runner-ups.
Best.

I love my 45 cal. Glock model 30. But I shot a full size 1911 and it was more accurate and less recoil than my Glock. So it all depends on how much money you want to spend.

I like the Colt 1911 semi auto, and the Glocks, but best is what suits you, not me.

Springfield Armory XDs get my vote. They are just as reliable as Glocks, but have better safeties and ergonomics. A little heavier too for less recoil. They look better too.

If you mean which is the best I think most will agree it is a Glock, the model is an individual preference based on what caliber and other options you like best.

glock but i prefer smith and wesson.High points .380 is hella accurate and cheap though. But out of the three in.380's the high point scores the best. But in .22 smith and wesson is the best .All around with accuracy less jamming and recoil in all calibers it would be glock.
