The title of the article is about Martin and Gordon, but about midway down the page it talks about RCR letting his grandson use the number 3.

I don't like it at all. The only person allowed to use that number in my opinion should be another Earndhardt.

Steffy: The article is quoting Richard Childress, so I'm inclined to believe that it's quite possible.

I don't think it would go over real well with NASCAR fans, especially the Earnhardt fan base....I agree with you, unless it's another Earnhardt I would rather the number stay retired.

As any Earnhardt fan, I was in mourning for months as I was sitting outside of turn 4 at Daytona that faitful day. I cried like a baby and thought my fanship to NASCAR was destroyed. However, just months later, I was at another race that same season, lacking some of the enthusiasm I had once known, but it was quickly regained knowing that Little E and some of my other favorites were on the track. Am I ready for the return of the #3? I would reckon given the right circumstances. Richard's son isn't racing in the Cup series yet, and for those of you who think the number is retired, or otherwise, need to review the rule book. The numbers issued by NASCAR become property of that owner to do with what they wish in terms of their drivers. I believe Richard isn't ready to bring that number back to the Cup level, and the one chance we had at an Earnhardt driving it again has come and gone. I believe it's time to grow up, continue supporting a sport that we still follow and love, no matter how self-sterilizing it's become with its political correctness. Richard Childress is still making way too much money off of merchandise with the number 3 still listed under Dale Sr. If he brings it back to the Cup level, I believe he will feel his way there first. Right now, it's time to prepare to support the number 88 and watch for Kerry's son...who reports say is a chip off of the old block...which is good because Kerry blows. lol Let's get ready for Daytona, shall we?

Check this out .......
"I'd like to see it not get on the track for at least a few more years," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said. "Eventually, it's got to be on the racetrack. It's just a number. But I'm not ready for it to happen just yet."
that's from an interview in 04. in the article it points out that Childress has driven the number and leased the number from NASCAR before Dale and since his death. Richard pays the yearly lease for the number and chooses not to run it.
Hey if Junior doesn't want the 3 car then maybe some deserving young hotshot should get behind the wheel! It's not like it would be a black goodwrench 3 car.

Nascar doesn't officially retire any numbers...So anything is possible..I'm sure someday down the road we will see another #3...As long as the driver can live up to the reputation of Dale Sr..Those shoes are going to be hard to fill.. In time yes there will be someone in the #3 I just hope its many yrs down the road, even after Dale Jr retires... I don't like it but, Childress has the number and I feel he will know when the time is right..

I remember hearing about a year ago or so that Richard Childress would pull the # 3 out on to the track only for an Earndhart and not nessicarily Junior. Keep it off the track

The loss of Dale Sr. was indeed a tragedy. But I wont comment on put it back out there or not. SR> had many many fans so I will put a different light on this. Many Many fans were also fans of these drivers Killed behind the wheel and their Numbers werent retired. Adam Petty--Kenny Irwin-Fireball Roberts-Blaise Alexander and more. Maybe who knows Dale Sr. would want the Famous #3 out on the track no Matter who is using it!!!!!

I agree that the number is always associated with dale, but i think richard is considering this after how mark martin handled getting to drive the 8 car next year.

I think Childress will be mighty careful but just letting that number get out on the track too soon.

Hey Snake, the idea of putting Audrey in the car sounds great!

A driver with some real 'tude.

Think of her tradin' paint with Lauren Wallace. Now that'd be a race. Would it be boring?

Billie says: "Naah."

I never saw Earnhardt race except once or twice, but I have alot of respect for him. Though, the hype around 'an Earnhardt has to drive the 3' has to stop because there may never be another Earnhardt either:
1. Good enough
2. Willing to do it

It depends on how many people have tattoos of the #3 (that's a spinoff joke from Dale Jr. losing his #8)

The 43 is out there, the 3 should be too. Its just a number. I assume some day after Jeff is done they'll let someone else drive a 24 too. NO NASCAR number is ever retired...
