It's a secular moral platform. It has roots in philosophy, the golden rule, and seems a great deal more logical than "Only god can make you a good person, otherwise you're an evil sinner!" I've always had a distaste for any world-view that precludes all human beings as disgusting creatures, yet maintains that we're god's perfect creation. That sort of twisted pseudo-logic is sure to create mental imbalances somewhere.
I'm not too into Humanism, either, though. Humanists are generally holier-than-thou speciesists who think they're so much better than monkeys and giraffes. Bloody racists.

Humanism is a broad category of ethical philosophies that affirm the dignity and worth of all people, based on the ability to determine right and wrong by appeal to universal human qualities—particularly rationality.[1][2] It is a component of a variety of more specific philosophical systems and is incorporated into several religious schools of thought. Humanism entails a commitment to the search for truth and morality through human means in support of human interests. In focusing on the capacity for self-determination, Humanism rejects the validity of transcendental justifications, such as a dependence on belief without reason, the supernatural, or texts of allegedly divine origin. Humanists endorse universal morality based on the commonality of the human condition, suggesting that solutions to human social and cultural problems cannot be parochial.

humanism is a philosophy brought up in the Italian renaissance where people embrace the worth of themselves and celebrate being human beings. in the time of the black plague, when anyone could have died, mostly the peasants made it through and look for work in other towns. then due to the lack of people, they were given apprentice roles to keep certain monopolies alive. then people got into the idea that they don't always just have to be lower class people for the rest of their live but with hard work and effort, they can succeed. such is the renaissance
