I am refering to this question.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071116113100AAXQJbc&cp=1
Only a handfull saw that 1+1 CAN equal 1. I was refering to boolean algebra, but it was good to see that some came up with other explanations too. That is what I was hoping for.
This question was meant to show one thing, some of you really do not have an open mind. Why do I want to show this? Because it is hard to sit back and watch you accuse others of doing something you are guilty of. You may ask, why didn't I direct this question towards Christians...well, quite honestly I don't see many of them claiming to be open minded...and if I am being really honest, I don't think most of them are. But I do think atheists should be if they make the claims that they in fact are open minded.
Now my question is to those that flat out told me I was wrong, stupid, a moron, or any other negative remark.
Do you admit that you have some work to do on opening your mind?

Ok...well...I'm not wrong, 1+1 does equal one in boolean algebra. This is a fact. This is not trickery, it is a valid branch of mathematics. I am not trying to "prove" God. Anything else?
Noble cause...maybe. Lost cause...starting to look like it.

Taelec: If your claim is that "It is Blue", then I will say it can be just about anything...even things that are conventionally thought of to be red. Anything is possible...even the illogical.
You are missing the point though. I was not looking for an answer to why 1+1=1. I was looking to see if people could comprehend it as a possibility...in this case it is a very true and factual possibility. But if you look at the question, not many could even see past the supposed "facts" that they have been programmed to follow.

1+1 = 1 is part of boolean algebra...just because wiki doesn't have an example doesn't make it not so. Maybe you should stop relying on wiki.
a 1 for TRUE is a very commonly used alternative...without it...your computer would not function. So yes, these are valid symbols. I could of said x+x=x...but that is not saying the same thing unles I say x=1, because x+x=x is valid in arithmetic if you say x=0.

I did not mislead anyone. I made a simple claim, 1+1=1.
If they were mislead it is because they are too close minded to think of alternatives to what they "think" they know. That was kind of the whole point. If you are truly open minded, would you reply to this claim with something like "you are stupid"? If you let yourself be mislead by my statement, that is your fault...not mine.
There were no qualifiers on my numbers, that should of been the first red flag for most open minded people. I could of easily said 1+1=8...and then later said 1dog + 1dog = 8legs. Or 1+1=3...and said 1man+1women=3humans (procreation).
I'm sorry, but if you were mislead that is on your responsibility for not being able to be open to alternate possibilities.

Actually, since it is the common definition, 1 + 1 = 2. It is not closed mindedness on their part, but deception on yours when you posted gibberish with improper notation without defining your terms. I could boost the apparent profits of my company by putting values in base 8, and that would be fraud. Your whole premise is based on your fraud.

>Only a handfull saw that 1+1 CAN equal 1. I was refering to boolean algebra
Yes, and banana+banana can equal banana too. Why? Because you can just as well use any symbols you like for boolean values. When you use the symbol '1', people assume you're talking in arithmetic terms. In other words, what you seem to be doing is deliberately misleading people, then telling them they have closed minds because they got misled. This is sort of like deliberately punching someone in the back of the head and then telling them they can't dodge punches. But it's not that they CAN'T dodge punches, it's just that they had no idea you were going to do something so out of the ordinary, and it would be a waste of time and energy for them to constantly dodge because someone could theoretically be about to punch them at any time. Similarly, it's not that atheists can't understand boolean operations, it's just that it's a waste of time and energy for them to do boolean operations as well as standard math operations every time they encounter something like 1+1 just in case the question has an unstated meaning that is out of the ordinary. So the bottom line is, saying they're close-minded just because you managed to mislead them is really rather foolish. And quite honestly, if the only way you can think up to say someone is wrong is by asking them a misleading question, then I'd have to say YOU'RE more close-minded than the people who answered.

Thats like saying..
It is blue.. What is it?
If you only put out as you did 1+1=1 with no further explaintion then you are wrong. Not that 1+1= 1 but wrong in how you think about others.
I think you mind needs more opening than any one you claim needs an open mind.
So I ask you It is Blue.. What is It?
No it can't be anyhing I have a specific thing in mind that Is blue and if you don't tell me what that is you will be wrong.
Much like your 1+1=1 You had a specific answer you wanted and you damned anyone who did not give you the answer you wanted.

By saying that evolutionists believe 0+0=1 your argument becomes deceptive right from the start. First of all it is not 'evolutionists' that originated the Big Bang Theory. Evolutionism and abiogenesis are two different things. Also the Big Bang Theory does not state in any way that everything was formed out of nothing. Please do some reading and research before making a fool of yourself. Secondly, christians really are saying that 0+1=infinity since they believe that a god created all life, all matter, all everything from inert matter (like creating man from dirt). Finally, your muslim beliefs are really no different than those of the christians. Allah+0=infinity. Of the choices you give the most logical, rational, and practical one would be the Big bang, abiogenesis, and evolution.

So basically you ommitted using the proper mathematical symbols but we are close-minded? Do you understand that there are things such as proper context needed to understand things? You are simply retarded and the close-minded one to the fact that you made a stupid misleading question and got called on for it. You know what tops it off? When one user starting saying Boolean Algebra and you told him to shut up and not give out the answer. You purposely set up a system to find the conclusions you wanted to find.

"This question was meant to show one thing, some of you really do not have an open mind."
Then you failed miserably at it. One can have a perfectly open-minded stance and still point out that you were wrong when you claimed that 1+1=1.
You seem very impressed by silly word games. None of this demonstrates what you seem to think that it demonstrates.
Are you open-minded enough to admit that you were wrong? So far it doesn't seem like it.

I didn't see your 1+1 question, but that reminds me of when in second grade I made this equation and didn't know about the order of operations: 10+10*10-10/10=19 (10+10=20,*10=200,-10=190,/10=19)
I see what you meant, but I'm technically Christian and I'm open minded. I don't care if you worship black.

So you capitalize the c in Christian, but not the a in Atheist. Sounds biased to me.
But, since you offered no point of reference in your original question, people unfamiliar with Boolean algebra would only be able to evaluate you from common parlance. Sounds like a set up, not a test of open mindedness.

Well, you missed one important thing.
Romulan solid geometry would also permit 1+1 to equal 2, 677.....
And, mathematics have nothing to do with open mindedness or christianity.
Mathematics involves possiblities, equations, etc.
My mind is totally open.... But, it doesn't matter how open minded I am, until there is some solid, irrefutable evidence that "god" exists, it's all BS and fairytales.

If you were looking for boolean algebra, you were using the wrong symbols. It was a trick question...
Symbols themselves may be meaningless, but we have associated meanings for them. Going and changing the meaning without explaining the change is a bad practice.
