Death is the end. Dead. Gone. Kaput. Nothing.

Atheists and Christians are in agreement over what happens to the body--it decomposes. The disagreement is over whether or not humans have what Christians call a soul. Christians think the soul goes to heaven or hell and atheists believe there is no soul.

I can't speak for all atheists (they are not a homogenous group), but most that I know believe that death is the end. I guess you could call it oblivion. But maybe not.....no one knows for sure. I kind of lean toward Hamlet when he said:
....But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprise of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action.

Atheism means no belief in god or gods; nothing more. So the answer to your question would vary depending upon who you ask.

This particular atheist is also a rationalist who has briefly looked at the evidence and determined that when you die people with shovels dig a hole; drop you in it; pour dirt on you.

This depends on the Atheist. Some think nothing happens, some believe reincarnation (Buddhism), etc.

Decomposition.

Other than that, no one knows, and there's no proof that anything else happens at all.

(Just this atheist's opinion. Some atheists actually do believe in spirits and reincarnation, etc. Atheist just means no belief in deities...)

quite simply that the body decomposes and perishes. No different to say an animal that has been left out in the open to die. It is not galmorous, but the truth is often not glamorous.

Different Atheists believe different things, but I believe that the lights go out and it gets all quiet.

You just die. Like Monty Pythons parrot.
You are no more.
Much better than being cast into hell's fire.
And much less boring than eternal paradise.

Sometimes they get put in a coffin and buried. Sometimes they get cremated. It sort of depends on the person's wishes.
