Im currently a pharmacist but Im not finding my work rewarding or enjoyable. Im 30 and Ive decided that I want to be a vet tech , because I dont want to live my life wishing I ahd become one and regretting it . . I have worked with animals in the past (working at animal shelter in college) and I found this job very rewarding and I actually looked forward to work. Ive decided I want to have a change in career and become a vet tech. What schooling does this require (Ive found a two year course) What hours do you work? How much do you make iff you dont mind sharing ? And what do you like most amount your job?

It requires at least 2 years of schooling. It also often requires state licensing which is a test that must be passed.
Hours for techs can vary depending on clinic/hospital you work for. It can be anything from 25 hours to over 40. I work an average of 30 hours per week. At the hospital where I work we have rotating shifts and 4 vets. Wages can be anything from minimum wage on up. It depends on the practice you are working for and also area of country and rural or city. It also depends on small animal practice, large animal practice or both.
What do I like most???? well the pets of course, :)

A down side is some clients can be very difficult to deal with so you need to be able to deal with that..you also need to be able to work well with hurt & frightened animals.

as with any job there are advantages and disadvantages.. i love being a tech.. depending on where you work, will depend on the quality of the medicine that is being practiced. you will learn how to deal with people. you will learn how to help animals..unfortunately you will be involved in euthanasia. however, sometimes i feel as though this is actually a good thing. to be able to stop the pain and suffering a dying animal is experiencing is a gift. but i have made some friends for life as a tech. there are also many specialties.. you could go the er route.. or behaviour or massage... or pet nutrition. i recommend first going to a shelter or animal hospital and asking them if you could observe for a day to see what it is like.. then if you do like it, i would go to school.. there are many two year programs in which you earn an associate's degre.. dont' go to a mail order or online school.. not as reputable and not much hands on experience. get an associates from a community college in the area. then take the test and get certified/registered/licensed. good luck!!! (alslo depending on where you live and the hours you work.. it doens't usually pay very well) but if you find a 24 hour emergency and referral practice ... you can get graveyard shift differentials...etc. the more experience you have, the more you get paid.. soak up every scrap of info you can

I started out @ 16 working as a kennel assistant and worked my way up the ladder. I never went to school, but I'd recommend doing so because you can make alot more money. Pay rates are $10-$18 (maybe more) If you are Registered and work at a Pet ER or specialty practice, you can earn upwards to $18. I've always worked 11a-7p but I'm sure many offices out there are looking for full time day help. It is the best job ever! Minus dealing with some obnoxious people, but that can be in any job field. You have to get used to see some pretty awful stuff, but you WILL get used to it. You won't lose your feelings but you will definitely have to realize that you can not always let emotions get involved. Good luck! Any other questions feel free to email!

Personally being a vet would be horrid, could you cope with putting animals down? Even small puppies sometimes and all sorts of cute animals. The blood and sometimes horrid cuts that can happen are also something to consider. A dog groomer is a great job, I volunteered at my local for a few months for college and I loved it. It's good to be so hands on with dogs but you have to be very patient and willing to adapt. Have you considered a zoo keeper, its a hands on job with all sorts of exotic animals?
