for the past 5 days i have been hearing the sound of my heartbeat in my left ear. it sounds similar to a sonogram(sp*?).
i went to a medical center which i think has nurses that look at you. this was 3 days ago when i went. the nurse said i should take Sudafed(sp?*) and see where it goes from there because he said he saw fluid in my ear. if it did not stop within 3 days, i should go to an ENT.
well, i still hear the heartbeat and im getting nervous it is something other than just fluid in my ear.
any answers to what else this could be?

This is pretty common - its called pusitile tinnitis. The carotid artery pass very close to the eardrum, and any type of swelling or inflammation inside the ear or in the neck can cause this to happen. If you have recently had a cold, flu, ear ache, sinus congestion, sinus headache, or stiff neck, then this will probably clear up on its own. If you have not had any of these things or other reasons why there might be swelling or inflammation, then its probably time to visit a doc.

In tinnitus, the sounds a person hears are actually perceptions. Since there's no actual source, they are often referred to as "phantom noises". I read that about 8% of all people in the US suffer from tinnitus so you are not the only one who hears these strange noises.

Tinnitus is actually not a disease. It is actually a symptom of a problem that is rooted deep, somewhere within your body. The problem could be a simple one like an infection in the ear, or even simpler, such as ear wax. Just clear the wax and get the infection treated, and the noises could go away. In some people, it could even be the result of a side-effect of a drug they took. Or it could be more complicated.

If you want to know more about this condition and wnat to learn how to solve naturally your problems with these annoying noises you should read this ebook: http://tinnitus.toptips.org

I had this for months on end, and it bothered the heck out of me, because it kept me from sleeping "on my favourite side" each night in bed. (I could only sleep with my left ear down so the heartbeat sound wouldn't keep me awake). It finally went away on it's own and hasn't come back. I attributed it to a combination of stress and the hotter weather of the approaching summer.

Have your blood pressure checked. I had the same thing and mine was high.
Try low sodium diet as well.
FYI-Sudafed makes the heart race as a side effect so this may intensify the feeling.
