You will need 40 lb of turkey - so 2 big ones or 3 little ones should do it. That should allow for some leftovers. Mostly you should figure 1/2 lb of meat per person, but turkeys have bones so 1 lb per person is good as a general rule. Like you said - a lot of stuff can be made ahead of time, and that would be a good idea. Also, think about purchasing some stuff ready made. Cooking for 40 people is a huge job. Either bake the pies ahead of time or purchase them already made. 8 slices per pie - you would need at least 5 pies, more would be better. Good luck. I hope your dinner turns out good.

wrap it in foil then place it in a thurmo bag but make sure it is very hot in the core {72 c} 161 f and when you get their make sure you can keep it above {65c} 149 f as anything below this causes bactirea to grow and can make you and your family sic. i sugest if you can't keep it above 65 c. 149 f . that you cook the hame then chill it down to below 10 c. 50 f. as it will last longer at a lower temp and cold cooked ham even glazed hames are wonderfull when served cold . as you said it would be several hours before it's served i think you should chill it you could always slice and rewarm it when you arrive . hope this helps you out and keeps you from becoming ill have a great christmas :)

once you remove it from your oven, I would cover it with aluminum foil and then take a couple bath towels and wrap around the ham. Once you get to your destination, keep the ham wrapped up until it is ready to serve.....but if you are able, if there is an oven there, put it on a high temp and just put your ham in the oven for a few minutes to reheat before serving.

Well I do not suggest it setting out.I say cut the ham and put in a crock pot on low with a bit of water so it does not dry out OR stick it in the oven on low.

You have ham for thanks giving? That's really cool (no pun intended)

I'd say find a nice glaze/sauce recipe, and keep the ham submerged in that. My mom makes some amazing glazes you should be able to keep it warm in the crock pot ,and with the glaze it shouldn't dry out.

Happy thanks giving I hope I helped
