I agree with you.
I think most people who are closeted theists (yes, I know how that sounds) are usually just going through a phase and are generally a lot younger then some of the colorful atheist regulars we have around here. I don't think that it is that they "secretly" believe, they are just confused.
Edit: Damn people, no need to freak out.

I believe the word for that is agnostic. Somehow, I'm kind of on that page. I was raised a catholic. I still sometimes believe, but I always feel awkward when the subject of religion is brought up in subjects, especially if there might be atheists in the group. My status on religion is very questionable these days. It's not that I don't believe or have faith, I just live my life how I choose, but can still have faith in some way.

Currently I'm agnostic. Atheists try to debate religion with science, which is probably the prompt for your question. I'm agnostic because I do believe there is a higher being, but religion has been very demoralizing. To elaborate, James Baker, Oral Roberts, Catholic Priests, etc. have given religion a bad name. It's difficult to believe a higher power would let people of that nature be a representative to them. On the other hand, you did have people like Billy Graham, who is devoted to his higher power and lived exactly what he preached. Because of the hypocracy of all the others representing religion, I've once stated to be Norse Paegan. That's the old viking religion. When I die, put me on a boat and shoot flaming arrows at me until I ignite and the Valkaries will ascend me to "heaven".
Do atheists believe in a higher power? Let's just say we can assume they believe in something, whether it's something to argue about with you or debate against you with.

Hmm interesting. There really is no way of knowing for sure if people actually do portray how they feel. I think a lot of believers in a religion follow a religion but might not necessarily believe it , having doubts about its accuracy. The same effect could be true for some atheists, human have always question the existence of a higher power so then i think it would be natural to question such a thing, but they might not necessarily believe in it. To question or doubt is natural i think.

Wow,this is pretty interesting, all I can do is laugh. Why would anyone secretly believe in god? Wouldn't that be against the beliefs? Which would make you a bad..well whatever you are, maybe your a born again or apart of Jehovah's witnesses they are the only ones I think crazy enough to ask this question. I don't care what religion you are but it's an oxymoron to me to secretly believe in god.

For the love of god!
This is like the 30 trillionth time a form of this question has been asked. I mean, maybe you're right about one or two, but you're acting like everyone secretly believes in God on here!
Alright, it's not as bad because you said a small percent, but still, how would you like it if people kept on believing that a lot of Christians are secretly atheists?

No.
I think it's silly that so many people think Atheists come here to "find out about God" or somehow "secretly believe". If they thought there was any chance of a God existing, they would be Agnostics.

I would like to think that knowing the definition of atheism, people would not be confused. I actually think there is a large percentage of church going citizens who may not beleive in a god, I believe that it is hypocricy. And to clarify, questioning ones beleifs is not "not beleiving" it is actually very necessary to question your beliefs. At the end if you still feel the same, more power to you. So no I think atheists are pretty straight forward.

I don't think of myself as an atheist, but I may come across that way in some of my answers.
And don't necessary believe in a higher power, but it sure would be nice.
The thought that there is absolutely nothing after you die isn't a very appealing thought to me.
Also I think finding my spirituality is a life long journey. I'm not going to label myself one thing right away, so just in case i die tomorrow I'll get into heaven.
That doesn't make much sense to me.

See the most popular definition for atheist is "someone who does not believe in God." But nowadays, a new kind of atheist emerges, "someone who does not believe in religion."
Some people for example believe that there is indeed a God, if only for cosmological reasons, i.e. nothing can be caused without a causer. I for one believe that there is a God and that no one is worthy to know of who he is and what he is like. In short, we should all believe in God, not people who say they're God.

Nope, at least in my case. Granted I would not mind seeing evidence for a god, but given that I know more about Christianity than I see displayed here, my motivation being here is not to learn about your faith.
To put that clearly, I'm looking for evidence but is seems that no believer in any religion on Y!A either has any or understands the concept - scary thought, huh?
