There are hundreds of books out there that try to answer your question better than I can.
I could say God is a million things, but in the end you won't believe anything but what you want to believe.
You don't want to hear that maybe God really is a man - for if He created us in His image then He must look like us and be a man. Nobody really wants to believe that.
No one wants to believe that God is not only a man but our Father who created us, and we are His children for nobody wants to believe that having children on this earth is our purpose.
No one wants to believe that this life is about experiencing physical reality, that is, having a physical body and experiencing ecverything that goes along with it - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and most of all, emotions. No one wants to believe that we used to live with God but are on this earth to find out what we are like when God isn't around, much like we found out what we were like when mom and dad weren't around when they went away for the weekend and we were home alone that first time age 15.
I could tell you that God is a real person of flesh and blood, and Jesus the Christ is His literal son on earth, and that Jesus is alive today, living with God, preparing to return to this earth very soon, but that would brand me as a heretic on this site, you know, a religious zealot trying to preach to the world.
In the end, you really want to believe that there is no God at all so you can stop feeling guilt for your sins, am I right? You really want to believe that God is just an idea, an entity with no form or shape, a feeling you sometimes get but goes away after a while, so you don't have to stand up and admit guilt at doing anything wrong in the end.
I could tell you the truth, the God is a live, physical, real being, but we both know that everyone prefers the imaginary God to the real one.
I'll still say hi if I see you.

God is a flawed proof in the most primitive of human logic.

God is a concept created by man to help compensate for the lack of certainty about creation and purpose. Who are we? How did we get here? Why are we here? Those are some pretty huge questions. Without that information, some may very find it hard to carry on daily. So, accordingly, in defense of our psychological stability, we find explanations. Things become quite elaborate (see the Bible) and otherwise rational become come to believe in "God" more than they believe in gravity.

There's one big problem. Creation is a recursive problem. Let's say that someday, somehow we solve God - in a manner such that no faith is required to believe. We have irrefutable proof and all the world's people line up under one concept of God........ Soooo...... from where did God come? If GodX begat God, then who begat GodX?

Not for me, thanks. I'd rather just accept that we are hear and preprogrammed to live, experience, feel, and appreciate life.

These are some very interesting answers. Quite comical, actually. For anyone that would like to know what God is, I invite you to read about near-death experiences. For those that have had them, you know what God is. For those that haven't, try reading the Near Death Experiences forum at CureZone.com or the wealth of information at near-death.com.

Are all of these people crazy or is it just a coincidence that hundreds of people have had similar experiences? (even 'former' Atheists).

What? Not Who?
Some would say an illusion, but one online dictionary says:
Definitions of God:

* noun: the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of the universe; the object of worship in monotheistic religions
* noun: a man of such superior qualities that he seems like a deity to other people

Example: "He was a god among men"

* noun: a material effigy that is worshipped as a god

Example: "Money was his god"

* noun: any supernatural being worshipped as controlling some part of the world or some aspect of life or who is the personification of a force

In philosophy, God is the thing that it should be in existence. Generally God is the one who you want his help when you don't have any probability of receiving problem from any other.
