Taurus PT 1911. Very inexpensive compared to the other manufactorers. Very nice gun as well.

Any of the WW2 GI model 1911 guns are good if you want a truly no frills basic model. They range from $350-$500. They are basically field-ready shooters.
Springfield Armory GI edition
Kahr-Thompson GI model
Rock Island Armory

Kimber, nicer Springfields, and others are not "starter" guns

It really depends on what you want to do and how much you are willing to spend.
I have a Kimber Custom II because at the time $750 did not get me what I wanted in any other 1911 Clone.
Good starter 1911s I think are below.
TAURUS PT1911
Kimber Custom II
Springfield GI model

I would agree with Bobbo, the Taurus 1911 is an excellent first 1911. It has all the extras that custom guns have at a lower price! Quality is very good as well!( I own one.)
