I live near an Army post and it was suggested to me that I find a soldier to do a contract marriage with in order to get my cancer testing and treatments paid for. Is this legal? What is the punishment for me, as a civilian, if it isn't legal?

Okay, let me clarify. I am not doing this... it was suggested to me, I had never really heard of such a thing and was just curious. I mentioned the cancer and not having benefits to give people an idea of why the contract marriage was proposed to me in the first place. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

i'm not a lawyer, so i can't give you legal advice...but this might help
my mother is going through the same thing. she lost her job of 10 years and was having a hard time finding another job. she recently found out she has cancer, and does not have coverage...
...she got in touch with Karmanos Cancer institute and they agreed to help her with treatment. I don't know to what extent, yet.
but you may want to try that route.

i don't know where you live. if karmanos cannot help you where you live, i'm sure they could give you info for similar treatment centers near you.
i am so very sorry for your bad situation. I feel so sad that people in situations like yours get stuck with no medical coverage in these situations.
best of luck
ALSO i know people on here are going to be very swift and cruel to judge you... but i understand the panic and the desperation you feel right now, like you would try anything to get help... but let me assure you... take all ways legal, things will only get worse if you break the law.

So I can only guess that you don't believe in God? Why you might ask... what does a marriage symbolize to you?
I'm going with jvb on this one. Work out your own healthcare issues with welfare.
Only an idiot soldier would marry you so you could have benefits. What kind of girl would marry for such a thing? The same kind of girl that would come after his retirement and everything else further down the road.

This is wrong. Even if it wasn't what would you do after your testing and treatments were paid for? Are you going to just dump the guy. Would you try to take half of what he has? You wouldn't be entitled to a damn thing in my opinion. Would you support yourself during this sham marriage. Ie 1/2 the bills, rent, food. Your own clothing or would you expect him to pay your way?

I feel bad for you about the cancer but a contract marriage is not the way to go.
It is illegal and highly immoral.
Besides how would you go about purposing that to a soldier....'hey dude, I'm sick, marry me."

You have to get married and act like you are, you will get discounted rates but not free medical. As long as the army does not know about this contract that you only got married got the medical nothing bad will happen to you and if does then soldier will get into a lot of trouble and will will be charge with frad.
On of my army buddy did this wife got the care she needed and when it was done the got a divorce and everything was ok. You can play the system just have to make sure no high ranking people know about it.

[What is the punishment for me, as a civilian, if it isn't legal?]
a stay at Levenworth, where you will get your treatment.

No, I do not think it is legal. The hard part would be to find a soldier who would do it, because they would get in as much (if not more) trouble than yourself. It falls under the same lines as hiding a previously known illness/injury, pretending to get hurt in the military, just to get the benefits for it.

I can't even begin to start what is wrong and immoral about that. Why don't you apply for public aid or go to the public health clinic instead?

it is a federal offense to defraud the United States Military. you could receive jail time and fines. You and the poor stupid fool who wants to jeopardize his own military career and benefits.
you have other avenues: state and local programs.
YES IT IS ILLEGAL, the military is NOT a welfare program.
