"Best" is a purely subjective term... some folk really like the Desert Eagle (Hollywood has certainly fallen in love with these).
I've fired the .50-Desert Eagle and own two "Baby"-Eagles in 9-mm and .45-acp respectively. And I like 'em a lot... they're durable and well made and, for my usage, fire smoothly & accurately.
There are definately some "more powerful" guns... (although I think the .50-Desert Eagle is the most powerful semi-auto currently in production)

Panos, you appear to be obsessed with the behemoth Desert Eagle. More power to you. Is it the best gun power-wise? Most definitely, NO. Smith & Wesson currently makes the most powerful handgun that is commercially available. Is the Desert Eagle the best gun? Again, NO; although it may work very well for you most of us are not large enough to comfortably carry or conceal one. Even though it is available in the huge .50 Caliber Action Express, this round is an over-kill for anything except big bear and boar and will overpenetrate in nearly any imaginable scenerio creating collateral damage that could ruin the shooter. If you like big pistols that are still practical to carry and use in a defensive scenario consider the Glock Model 20 in 10mm. Or the .357 Sig. Or even the venerable .45 acp. This is the only one recommendable for defensive purposes with just plain, old ball ammo although hollowpoints will serve you better. Even though it doesn't have the raw power of the fifty, ten, .357 Mag. or Sig rounds you'll still be well armed with a .45 acp.
Best.

Once they finish building a sturdy enough frame for the G&S .825 Magnum Express, then you'll have the most powerful handgun.
As far as overall, most rifles can generate more power and have more 'knockdown power' than even the Desert Eagle, regardless of if it's .50AE, .44MAG or .357MAG.
The .50AE, the Eagle's most famous chambering, offers shooters about 1400ft/lbs of energy at it's maximum loads out of the shorter barrel. My Marlin carbine is capable of getting close to 4000ft/lbs out of a .45/70.
The thing to really think about is that the .223, considered by many to be weak, or a 'mouse gun' makes aproximately the same amount of energy as the .50AE.

Depends on what you think is best in a firearm. I do not like them I have shot a few one in 44 mag and one in 50 ae they both kept spitting brass right in my face. This is do to the rather large mass of the Rotating bolt on the gun. So I would not buy one just because of that. Is the 50 Ae powerfull yes you can hunt deer sized game with it. I do believe it is the most powerfull commerical cartridge avalible in a semiauto pistol right now. They are however not for a beginner in pistol shooting. These are big heavy and have a nice bit of recoil to them.
The best gun every produced is the 1911 in my book. No one firearm other than the Mausuer model 98 has been copied by more manufactures and had more different varations made on it.

Either the Smith&Wesson .460 or the .500 are the most powerful, outside of single shot weapons or custom loads. The Desert Eagle is really a poor choice of handgun.
