Is it acceptable for stores catering to Hispanics to use racial epithets when referring to Caucasian residents of the United States?Apparently so. According to the Washington Times online edition, a furniture store located in Alexandria, Va., has posted a sign calling Americans 'gringos'. The Times reports that,

It's wrong but no one cares if they offend white people or not. I think the PC crap is getting way out of hand. Don't worry about that store though, it'll be bankrupt in a few months. Racial profiling doesn't count if it's against whites either. A sad commentary on American politics, isn't it?

I'm gonna have to go with "gringo" not really being derogative. I've been using it for a while, never using it an insult. I normally use it either affectively, or to explain why the "gringo" does not understand something about my culture.

But if you want to go deeper, we can always go into power struggle rules. Women can talk trash about men, men can't really do so about women. Blacks can say things about whites, if whites did something similar they'd be sued and chastised, even by fellow whites.

The way things are built is that the sector in power has to play a much more political correctness game than those without it.

Not saying its right, but those seems to be the rules we seem to be given.

'Gringo' does not mean white, it means 'foreigner.' In Mexico, it generally means American.

And, it does seem to be acceptable. If you call a spanish speaker on the use of 'gringo,' he'll likely explain to you that it's not an offensive term in spanish.

It's one of the more minor double-standards in race relations: whites do not get to decide what terms are offensive to them, that is determined by the 'real meaning' of the word; all other minorities decide when they're offended, and the intent of the speaker is not a defense.
