A teacup is not better. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TEACUP dog. It's a bogus marketing term breeders and puppy mills use to try to sell and extra small dog for a high price. These dogs usually unhealthy.

There's no such thing as "teacup". "Teacup" is just a fancy name for an extra small dog bred purely for profit. The Maltese comes in one size. The breed standard calls for the Maltese to be under 7 pounds. If that's the case, even a 3 pound Maltese is still within breed standards, but just on the smaller side.
Please do not buy into these "teacup", "toy", "micro" dogs that are bred by irresponsible people for their own selfish reasons. These are not people you should support. No good, responsible, and ethical breeder would EVER label their dogs teacup, toy, etc. It's a fancy name for "a quick $1,000 from an unsuspecting and uneducated sucker". People do not do their research BEFORE purchasing a puppy, so they easily get sucked into getting these over-priced puppies. Also, they get sucked into this fad of getting the extra small dogs that are small enough to fit in handbags. Yes, they are cute and very small, but in reality, they can be trouble. They're not susceptible to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar that CAN kill), broken bones (they have very small and fragile bones), and other health problems.
If you're really considering getting a Maltese, please do as much research as possible on the breed. I recommend you look into a Maltese Rescue and adopt one. A REPUTABLE and RESPONSIBLE breeder is the next best place to get one. Look on http://www.akc.org to find a reputable breeder in your area that not only shows their dogs, but does genetic and health tests, has perfect examples of the breed, and can tell you exactly why they bred certain dogs and why they are breeding. It's your responsibility to learn as much as possible prior to getting a puppy. A puppy is a lifetime commitment. Are you ready for that?

Teacup breeds are a BAD IDEA. They have short life spans, and are fraught with health issues. They are usually bred in PUPPY MILLS, which is an AWFUL AWFUL existence for the breeding parent dogs, and produces SICKLY dogs.
Go to the shelter, get a real dog, and give it a home. Or just get fish.

A 'teacup' is just a fancy name for a runt. If you want a healthy dog, get a maltese. If you want a sickly little runt...you get the picture.

Teacups do not exist. It is a false claim made by puppy mills and other disreputable breeders to sell sick, weak, runty pups. Most dogs labeled teacup have severe health issues and often die young.
