Last night at the debate a mom was complaining that her son who had joined the army had to go to war! Shouldnt they have known that was a possibility? What function did they think the Army provides?

Yes she should of known but it depends on what her son was telling her and what she really wanted to believe. No parent or spouse wants their loved one in harms way but joining any branch of the military it is going to be expected for most that they will deploy weather to Iraq or Afganistan.

I guess sometimes if we think of something for to long we tend to believe that. I guess she was really hoping he wouldn't go but the army had other plans for that.

BOO HOO HOO. We have been at war for over 4 years. Everyone on active duty has either enlisted or re-enlisted during this war.

And we were in Afghanistan before that.

What are the chances of going into a war zone when you join the Army.

Give me a break. That's almost as bad as the young soldiers wife who cried in my office because her Army clerk Husband had to get out from behind his desk and go to the field.

Sorry but the Army has a job to do and thank God our Army is still the best there is.

That is exactly right I have to say this as a veteran of the U.S.Army & Navy,I am really getting sick n tired of parents who complain that there child joined the military and that all of a sudden they end of it Iraq or Afghanistan, give me a break parents ok that is why it is called the military this is not (Club-Med) or the Boy Scouts off to some Jamboree ok,anybody who joins the military pretty much is going to end up in one of those theaters according to where there speciality or a billet need to be filled.
N-they knew so this mom and all parents need to stop crying n get over it ok n yes!my son was a Marine.n was on duty the day 9/11 happened at Camp pendleton,San Diego,so don't think I do not know what I am talking about bout I am sick of hearing these moms whine about there babies going of to war well guess what ur babies were not forced to sign those papers n raise there right hands at the swearing in ceremony now were they so they knew what they were getting into so u parents who did not complain that until ur kids was going to Iraq, don't whine n complain now deal with it n move on ok!!

People don't think about things before they speak or do them; if you volunteered for the military you volunteered to go to war. That would apply at any time in history including in times of peace becausesmething could start the next day. I have little use for people who joined the military then complain about they don't want to go to war or the Reservist/National Guard personnel who are upset they get called up to active duty-you join and get your pay and benefits but that means you have the bad times also.
Sam-The job of the military is not to protect you or this country; the oath taken is to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. The real bottom line is that the military's job is to follow orders given through/by the change of command unless that order is unconstitional.
Jerbson-The Coast Guard is not part of the American military; they are a uniformed service, as is the Publc Health Service, but not a branch of the military as they are not part of the Department of Defense.

Absolutely...the army fights wars...therefore if you go into the army...you just might be sent off to fight in a war...it's simple if you don't want any chance of going into harms way stay the heck out of the military...these ppl who are whining that so & so went into the military to get a "free" education and are now shocked that they're being sent to the sandbox, .tough...should have thought about that BEFORE signing on the dotted line...afterall...what did YOU THINK we do with the nearly 1/2 trillion dollars that is spent a year on all sorts of thing to kill other people with?

Her son should've known what he was getting into. You should not join the army if you are not willing to fight, because that's what they're FOR. The lack of need for the army until Iraq lulled many people into a false sense of security and many joined the army just to earn money for college.
However, her son would probably be humiliated to know his mother was saying this, and he likely isn't complaining. (At least out loud.)

If he joined the National Guard they are told they will not deploy by recruiters. They are told that when Active duty soldiers get deployed they get activated to fill in the holes at the US base. Now that is a lie but they do it to get their numbers up. I have seen this happen a lot in the past few years, people enlist for the college money and really do not want to deploy or even be in the army they just see it as a piggy bank for College. It has been on the news so much lately I am surprised that people would still fall for that lie.

If she is surprised that her son is going to war then she was either A) lied to by her son about what he was doing or B) Completely oblivious to what's going on in our country right now.

What did she think the Army was training her son for?

Hello Army!! Did she miss the phone calls or letters about rifle and bayonet training? How about when he told about learning to throw a grenade? Some people are so dense. What did she think her son was exempt? I know people who have been deployed to the Middle East like 6 times.

Ugh, I hate people like that. To think that her son would be the only one "special" enough to not get sent to war. He willingly signed up, knowing that we have people in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That's like a surgeons mother complaining because her son had to perform surgery, it's preposterous!
