Here Are The Main Differences:
60GB: 60GB Memory, 4 USB Ports, Memory Card Readers, PS2 Game Compatibility.
40GB: 40GB Memory, 2 USB Ports, No Memory Card Readers, No PS2 Game Compatibility.
Personally, having owned one since the release, I think the 60GB is the better buy. It is slightly more expensive, but for what you get, it is definitely worth the extra money.

The only difference between the 40GB PS3 and 60GB PS3 is:
40GB PS3 has 2 USB ports (the 60GB PS3 has 4 USB ports).
The 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games. The 60GB PS3 can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game ever made.
And the 40GB PS3 doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots, but the 60GB PS3 has the digital camera flash card slots (Memory Stick Duo, SD Memory cards)
Both the 40GB and 60GB PS3 has the same quality. Both of the consoles will give you the same graphics, built in WiFi, Bluetooth, a Web browser, Blu-Ray, and everything else except for what I listed above.
But, in my opinion, the 60GB PS3 is the better buy because it can play nearly every PS1 and PS2 game, plus it comes with a few more features that the 40GB PS3 doesn't have.
