The idea that Mormons reject technology comes from those who confuse us with the Amish. In fact, Mormons have embraced technology. Mormons invented word processing (WordPerfect), video games (Atari, "Pong"), the odometer, fry sauce, television, the electric traffic light, the hearing aid, and synthetic diamonds, among other products. Novell was also founded by Mormons. Napoleon Dynamite's Kip, played by a Mormon actor, expresses the Mormon love-affair with technology in his touching ballad, "I Love Technology...Always and Forever."

I don't think I've ever seen anybody who confused Mormons with the Amish. Is this really that common?

I knew about the odometer thing- that was invented while we were crossing the plains!... The first one was a cloth tied to a wheel-spoke.... but someone had to count the revolutions, and I'd be willing to bet that at least sometimes that person miss-counted.... or lost track.... But then someone got creative and built this contraption with wooden gears and stuff.

Filo Farnsworth (inventor of the technology behind television) was LDS? Cool!

If we truly rejected technology, then I'd be trying to figure out how to watch conference... which is normally broadcasted via satelite to.. uh, anyone with a dish and the codes, then it's re-broadcasted on KBYU and BUY-TV.

Did anyone see the special they had on the renovation of the Tabernacle in SLC?... now that's pretty great technology!

First, I had no idea anyone confused the Amish with Mormons! Lol, if people are going to religion/life style bash, they should at least try to get the different groups straight!

Second, whoever said they had never seen any fat Mormons, I know quite a few of them.

I wouldn't exactly call fry sauce, technology. Mixing Ketchup and Mayo is not rocket science. And if Mormons embrace technology, why do they discount the DNA evidence that proves the BoM wrong. The church even tried to do their own DNA study, until they realized they got the same result. Then it conveniently and quietly went away with no announcement of the results. Yeah, that's embracing technology. But hey, you have fry sauce.

This "clarification" for how Islam at last destroyed Islamic accomplishments in technologies and scientific analyze to place the Muslim worldwide at an astounding drawback interior the fashionable worldwide is a desirable apologetic. This "God is attempting out your obedience" excuse is hassle-unfastened in a large many non secular traditions. (of direction, neither the Quran nor Hadiths are stated for this yet actual there is a few passage that could desire to take on the activity.)

That's interesting, thanks. I think we embrace the best of both worlds... the simplicity of self-reliance (eg home gardening and home production, solar power, etc) and the complexity of worldwide networking, which gives us the power to do family history research, to learn about the world (eg. its politics, geography, history, cultures, ecology, etc - which Brigham Young said was important), and to share the marvelous work and wonderous knowledge that we are so blessed to be able to participate in and know.

I think Mormons associate strongly with the Ahmish (well, I do, anyway) because of their devotion to the simple lifestyle that we also attempt to embrace... but while embracing the cultural roots of humanity (and therefore sustainability principles), we do so in a spirit of acceptance... accepting both the old and the new... so long as its all good and useful.

The man who invented tv was a farmboy from preston Idaho (Napolean Dynamite country) who, while plowing on his tractor, noticed how the furrows at the end of the row looped around continuously--something about that inspired the creation of tv--what, I don't know, I'm stupid!--but I read about it. Also a LDS guy.

In some spanish versions of "Witness" (movie about the Amish with Harrison Ford) they translated "Amish" to "Mormon" (incorrectly of course).

Anyway, that may have contributed to it.

That's an impressive list. Thanks

Although, I'm not sure I would include fry sauce as a technology.
