could it be to cover up her own pregnancy?
could it be that she really believed they were the last people on earth?

either way, it has been determined by some that what she did was wickedness.
to me it is more like Drug Rape, not a question of righteousness.

Funny, I just read that yesterday.
The daughters did this because they were isolated and afraid for their future.
Their fiances had died in Sodom; Lot's wife was dead also. If they failed to have children, not only would there be no one to care for them in their old age, but Lot's lineage would end. This was considered to be a terrible thing.
Yes, sleeping with their father was a terrible thing, but they were more afraid of dying alone than they were of sinning.

Here's something interesting to note; their children were the origin of the line of Moab. Ruth was a Moabitess, and she was in the lineage of Christ.
God sure can use some weird circumstances, can't he?

I actually have been asked a simular question before.
( 1 ) We have to look at the time that they were in. We have to see that prior to aristotle, most people thought that the world was flat. We have to see that, some places were so isolated that the peopkle living there would assume that they were the only people on earth.
( 2 ) Think from a womans point of view. In the time of Lot. Most females lives with their parents until they were wed. If they were not wed. Then they still would continue to dwell with their parents. For all we know. Lot's daughters could have been getting up in age. And had grown desperate for a child. Desperation is the cause of alot of individuals performing acts that they normally would not. Even in our current society. There are women who are so desperate to have a child. That they kidnap children from hospitals.

So, even though Lot's daughters did sin. From a purly philisopical point of view, we can understand why Lot's daughters acted in the manner that they did.

Well, her statement in the Book of Genesis did indicate that she believed that three of them are the remaining people in the reachable area, which is quite limited considering Lot's old age and his preferences to stay in caves. She seems to be affraid that their eldery 'father' will not be able to provide men for them to have sexual intercourses. It was never stated that she really believed they were the last people on earth.

The eldest daughter wished to preserve her and her sister's family line, she definetly focused more on her self interest and not their 'father''s interest, considering that she have to made him drunk to forced him have intercourse with them. So yes, it was a drugged rape.

It should be noted, in other scriptures it was hinted that Lot's 'daughters' were NOT really his. The Qur'an for example said that Lot's wife betrayed him and she was unwilling to left behind Sodom. The Qur'an mentioned Lot's wife betrayal in the same line as Noah's, and in another passage an angered and confused Noah was notified that his drowned 'son' was not part of his family.

If we cross reference this, it was possible that Lot's don't know his 'daughters' are not his daughters. However his 'daughters' might realized that they're not really his daughters, plus know that their family lines will stop unless they procreate using their 'father'.

Because their mother was incapable of conceiving - wot with being a pillar of salt, and all. They wanted to protect their father's bloodline, and that seemed like a good idea at the time.

When you are raised in a household where your father will sacrifice you to a mob of sex starved villagers, your moral compass is gonna' be whacked.

Their offspring gave rise to the Moabites and Ammonites, and God made sure the Children of Israel wiped the desert floor with them, so it clearly was a Bad Idea.

I think it was also written by Israelites to demean the Ammonites and Moabites centuries later. Every tribe that had a claim to a birthright such as Esau and Ishmael was also treated in a similar manner.

She and her sister, who also conceived with Lot, upon seeing the destruction of Sodom and Gemorrah believed that they were, in fact, the last 3 people on earth.

Because they believed they were the last ones on earth. Their ancestors, the Ammonites, and the Moabites were the evil result of the incest.

You have to remember, Lot's daughters were raised in Sodom. It's kind of hard to get that kind of brainwashing out of your kids. Kind of like sending your kids to public school today.
