I have had her nearly a week. She's had NO indoor 'accidents' and I can let her sleep anywhere she pleases in the house. When she wakes up, she begins to whine and I take her outside potty. She goes right away & I praise her and give her a small treat. Is it even possible she 'gets it' already? She's a long-haired miniature Dachshund. She sleeps the entire night with me and whines if she needs to go at anytime during the night, but has not had to wake me for 2 nights now. She eats and drinks and plays just fine.

Thank you everyone! She is a bit spoiled, but is a very laid-back pup. I know the breeder said "it's been too cold out" when I asked had she been outside before we got her. Lame-o excuse! But, I set Cali on the cement & she waddles onto the grass & does her business right away! I do take her out often-after sleeping, after a long round of playing, etc. It took me YEARS to master the potty-plan, but I just proved to myself-often is better! (duh, right?) Again-thank you all!!!

Congratulations you got very lucky with that, yes it is possible that she is already potty trained a lot of breeders work with their puppies before they sell them to make sure they are potty trained, because alot of times people buy a puppy, get it and it is not potty trained and then people don't want to deal with that and just give it away or take it to an animal shelter, so if she isn't have any accidents and she is going potty outside then it is very likely the person you got the puppy from worked on potty training her.

It would be very rare, but it could be possible. I must tell you as a behavior counselor, though, that you will be better off in the long run if she starts having accidents and she takes the "normal" time to housetrain. Pups that have few accidents and seem to housetrain quickly generally are handfuls and very bossy pups. The average person is not equipped or experienced enough to handle an intelligent dog; when their brains aren't used properly, smart dogs find ways to entertain themselves and get what they want. I have talked with other trainers who have had the same experience - I would be curious to know if Bozema and other frequent repliers here have, too.

I know houestraining is no fun, but I think it's the lesser of two evils in this case!

She's certainly off to a very good start! And yes, it is possible, 20 plus years ago I got a female pit bull pup at 6 weeks, she peed in the house exactly one time, after that, she would go to the door, or stand in front of the full length window whenever she needed to go out....and not to be contrary to the poster before me, she was not a trouble maker at later age- she was easily one of the best behaved dogs I have ever owned. I left for work one day and ended up being sent to the hospital by ambulance, poor dog was left alone for 11 hours in the house and didn't pee on the floor- boy was she happy to go outside when we got home though!

Yes, it is very possible. I got my dog when he was just six weeks old and two weeks later he was trained to go outside. I did it the same way you did, positive reinforcement each time he went outside. I NEVER spanked him and still haven't.

Dogs generally prefer to go on grass, so it seems natural to them. You can house train them by taking them out VERY frequently and putting them in a crate when you do not have your hand on them or when they are not in your lap. He learned very quickly that going on the grass was what we wanted him to do and he was eager to please us. He never goes in the house.

Probably not. During training, dogs tend to recess (things are going good, and then all the sudden its like the dog doesn't remember anything). A week is too short a span to be able to tell.

Yes it's possible. Many breeders start to house train pups before they leave their mother. Lucky you, makes life much easier doesn't it. Fuss your little one for me.

it is very unlikely but yeah, its possible. some dogs just learn faster than others. You have a genius there. watch out because that means he is going to learn a lot of other tricks fast!

Yes, it can be possible. Some dogs can be quite intelligent. Most dogs take longer, but there have been cases, such as my beagle, who have 'got it' early. [:

Congrats.
