I see nothing wrong with people in their 30s text messaging - it is the current 'in' thing to do.
But asking her out in a text message? That's just lame. Call her or do it face to face. And the smilies, again, I have no problem with. Sometimes they are the best way to convey emotion in a text based form.

Hate to say it, but I'd agree with your friend. I'm almost 30, and have been married almost 10 years already- and even I text. The smiles/sad faces just are there to help convey the tone in which the writer is "speaking", since it is often hard to tell when you read the things! (ie, was that a joke, or did he seriously mean that??! lol)
Texting isn't for everyone, but even my text-illiterate husband has found uses for it, like when we're at work/school and have something important to say (like about our sick child, etc)... sometimes you just can't take the call, but need the information.
Now, that said, texting alone without ever calling is actually SUSPICIOUS to me- makes me think they're hiding their conversations from *somebody*- wife maybe? Be careful if there is NEVER a phonecall, or just at odd hours (especially if you/she is never to call without texting first!)

I am 27 and I text message like it's my job. I'm constantly on my blackberry for both personal and business reasons. You may consider it rude and offensive, but to an extremely fast-growing population, - of all demographics - text / SMS messaging is becoming a widely accepted means of communication - whether it be formal or informal conversation (including setting up a date).
If you prefer the old fashioned phone call, then stick to your beliefs and continue to do-so. However, if your friend thinks that it is perfectly fine, then to each his/her own.
As one of those late 20's working professionals in a tech field, I can honestly say that sms text messages IS how a lot is done anymore.

No, never think like that - you are never too old to do anything!
We might be grown up as of personalities and looks, but we're still young and playful at the very inside of us. I believe there is still a child inside us.
And to answer your question, no I think including smily faces in texts is kinda cute:)

I don't think it's wrong, if both parties enjoy it. What's wrong with a smiley face? We all need one of those every now and then. Besides, men your friend's age usually pay for their own texting, unlike most teens. Lighten up a little, life will be more fun :-)! Best to you!

You are wrong. Welcome to the real world. Technology is all around us. Between text, blogs, email, and the like, people have many options to ask someone out. You think a person should call, what about when that was unexceptable? Telephones have not always been the ideal way to ask someone on a date. My grandmother will tell you that my grandfather had to come to her door to ask her out.

I don't see what age would have to do sending txt messages. It is an easy way to leave little cute notes and stuff. Why would a person want to be professional all the time and not have fun. Sometimes it is good to feel like a kid again.

sometimes txting is stupid when it's way more romantic to call, but if they just checkin up on her or asking her out.. it's ok.. i mean i'd rather get turned down or turn someone down txtin rather than saying it to them.. and your never to old for a smily face!! ;-)
