when i read this, the reproach comes because the women already had the children, but the children have no name, hence the reproach.
And yes there were wars where me died and left their brothers to keep Righteous Seed unto their family line. but there is no reproach against them.
then there is another matter where adulterous NON Israelite women who were called strangers are brought into the picture and the reproach against "MEN" becomes a cry of repentance from the lord.
and YES I do read the links at LDS.org in fact if it wasnt for the church website I would not be able to recall where every verse is found. i do have a database but it almost antiquated to use anymore.

Back in the day there was a time when women who weren't married were considered less than nothing. A woman who couldn't find a man to marry couldn't have children and was therefore useless to the culture. So when it says that seven women will say to a man, just marry us and take away our reproach it means that for them it wouldn't matter that he didn't love them, all they needed was human companionship - of which they couldn't find in society because they were not married. It was very harsh for single women back then. Even if they could somehow find food to eat and shelter over their heads, they had no one to interact with socially. It's the difference between existing and living. So they're telling this man that he won't have to DO anything for them, they'll provide their own shelter, food, clothing, etc. just take away their reproach. And what might he get out of it? Back then, very righteous men who where obiedient to God could have multiple marriages IF he could provide equally for each of them (hence only the very, very wealthy who were also very, very righteous could do this). By having SEVEN wives he would have a LOT of clout amongst the other men and his ideas would be listened to.

During war time there was more women who survive then men. Most of the men in the olden days were the ones who did most of the fighting.
In the Mediterranean area when their was a reference to a surplus of women it mean a defeat for that nation.
When the men died the women had to take over and work in the fields to get their own bread. The few men left had to repopulate the land. So it was not uncommon for men to have multiple wives, after a war.
Even by the fact that they decimated someone Else's land and killed the men and took the virgin women for themselves.
As cruel as that sounds it did keep that nation from dieing out completely. But it give the men multiple foreign wives.
God allowed that at that time because of the fact humans may have died out with out men taking multiple wives.
More men die, from accidents and wars and job related injuries. There has always been a surplus of women especially in a war torn countrie.
In reading the history of these nations, when the men were gone and the land left to a small group of women it had peace. Until the next generation of men showed up.

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

Self-explanatory. Women don't get a say and must share a single man as repentance for original sin. "To take away our reproach" gives it away.

It is one of the many OT references to polygamy. Polygamy has been practiced at various times, as commanded by God.
