"This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man."

Fundamentalists who condemn gay people are already disobeying Jesus's command "Do not judge." So how Christian can they be?

I would be surprised if many of them ever read Shakespeare anyway, and if they did, they would not put his writings on the same authoritative par with the Bible.

That phrase by Shakespeare does not fit with Biblical teachings. In fact, the Bible tells us to get rid of the old self and to live a new life to Jesus, Colossians 3:9-10 and Romans 6:3-6. The Bible actually warns about going back to the old self in Hebrews 10:26-27.

Ummm...that quote is from Hamlet, and it was spoken by Laertes. Who was a fool.

I mean, in the play, he's there for comic relief. Shakespeare meant for him to be the fool, the clown, the idiot.

I know the words sound very appealing to U.S. people who like to be their own rulers and gods with little regard for anybody else, let alone any authority, but it's supposed to be tremendously ironic.

Anyway, most Christians don't look for religious instruction from Shakespeare, so they aren't going to bother interpreting it.

So when I was a teenager I should have had sex with everyone on the football team because I had the urge...

damnit

Wasnt Shakespeare a coke head?

And your saying I shouldve stripped my way through college too?

DAMNIT!!

At least I let myself go through my vodka adorall phase....ahh the memories...

I cant think gay is okay, I would never let my fiance do that to me...its just gross

But as people im fine with them, my neighbors throw the best parties and they are the nicest ppl in the neighborhood. Just a couple of days ago I saw a gay couple with four adopted kids and I thought that was beautiful.

Shakespeare also taught to kill yourself if things didnt go your way...

Cue a load of bigoted comments from people who know sweet FA about being gay.

The real question is why do religionists feel they have authority to demonize homosexuals by attaching to every negative thing they can think of.

Gay-bashing is the one thing that brings Christianity and Islam together, just as Jew-bashing did before it.

Searcher asked a queston that seemed like rhetoric rather than searching...

"If you are gay, why do you care if others accept you."

You really don't know why a human being would want to be accepted by other human beings ?

I am learning, every moment...

Are you really asking how Christians interpret Shakespeare as a valid argument for homosexuality?

If you are gay, why do you care if others accept you. If you accept yourself, then what is the issue?

well, I am glad you attributed that to Shakespeare rather than the Bible -
Fortunately, Shakespeare is not God and compared to the commands of God, Shakespeare might sound nice but it means nothing.

The only thing I have to be true to, regarding my life, is who God created me to be- not the influence of the world, not my unstable feelins and emotions, not someone else's perception or idea of who I am supposed to be- but knowing that I was created in the image of God, knowing that I am tainted by the sin of this world, knowing that Jesus has overcome that sin and I do not have to walk in it, knowing that through the Holy Spirit I can and will be perfected and made holy as He is holy and that I do not have to be defined by the sin that often so easilybesets me- but I am fogiven and free to be who God created me to be.
God did not create anyone to be a homosexual, they do not have to be bound or defined by that sin- walking in homosexualit is NOT being true to themselves- it is walking in the lie of sin, a false perception of self.
