I can definately tell you that it is easier to believe in George Washington. Jesus wasn't an American president. So much is missing and contradictory about who he was that we may never know who he was. I agree with the guy that says, "I believe in both and worship neither."

You can believe in something you will never really know. Kids do it all the time. Oh yeah, I believe that Jesus was important and represented God. He could say he was the son of god if he wanted to. Caesars did too. Doesn't make it so. He's more like a male Joan of Ark. A symbol of spirituality.

Anyway, nevermind Jesus, why not focus on the Way? One more thing. I can't stand in a room and worship the invisible and pretend he's right there in front of me! That's too bizarre! It reminds me of make believe or 'the imaginary friend' game.

I believe Jesus was a man who actually did live. I think he was a religious man and had followers. There are some records of him just like old George Washington. On the other hand I don't believe for a second he was divine or the son of god. He was just some guy the church used a couple hundred years after his death to make it seem like he was something more than a man.

People believe in George Washington because there is very real evidence that he existed. There is very little proof (to many religions and people) that Jesus ever existed. But it is also human nature to search for meaning, and Jesus often acts as a scapegoat for people to blame all their troubles on. He is also a figure that promises a future in an unknown theory of what happens after death.

You must be very new here. Earlier you observed that there are a lot of atheists here. Keep going, you've almost hit on all of our favorite "asked several times a day" questions.

I know, tell everyone that atheists believe we came from rocks, or that the universe formed from nothing. How about some of the other classics, like "Do atheists believe in love"? Or you could even post the anecdote about the Christian student proving his professor doesn't have a brain simply by using his atheist professor's "logic". We love that one.
Or, you could save yourself the trouble and use that nifty search function.

Both are historical figures, yet Jesus had far more impact on humanity than ole George ever did. That's why believing is a good idea.

Belief and worship are not mutually exclusive, neither are they inclusive.

The teachings of 'love thy neighbor' no matter what may have been applicable during JC's time, however in this day and age, this teaching fails to convince even most Christians given the way they discriminate and demonstrate their bigotry towards those whos spiritual choices are different.

"My beliefs and my religion are the true one and all other are suspect' ....seems to be the motto of today's religious person.

Pity that this concept of unconditional love falls by the wayside in this 'modern and progressive' world of today.

Best guess. I'd be open to someone named Yeshua bar Yousef living in Roman Palestein, and teaching his version of Jewish teachings. There is some evidence that there may have been someone like that. All the other stuff is where you start to get into problems with historical record.

George isn't claiming that he is going to send me to burn in hell for eternity if I don't believe in him.

Extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof.

George also has a gazillion bits of evidence for existing...

Your jesus? One really old badly written book about a hateful deity out in the desert.
